HAYWARD, Calif. - Head Coach Amy Gerace and the Cal State East Bay women's soccer coaching staff announced the signing of four players to Letters of Intent for the 2010 season during the February early signing period. The Pioneers will welcome freshmen Caley Amen, Gail Bassett and Katie Brawley, as well as community college transfer Kristen Elms to the ranks for their second year in NCAA Division II and the CCAA.

amenHailing from Lakewood, Colo., Caley Amen is a midfielder at Green Mountain High School. During her first three years as a varsity letterwinner and starter, Amen has helped lead the Rams to three straight Colorado State 5A playoff appearances. As a junior captain for Green Mountain, she was a Jefferson County All-Conference Honorable Mention selection and will serve as a captain again during the 2010 season for the Rams. As a midfielder for the Colorado Storm '92 Royal for the last two seasons, Amen has played at both the Elite I and Super League levels. Prior to joining the Storm, Amen played her club soccer with Colorado Rush for seven years, helping the club to back-to-back Colorado State Cup quarterfinals appearances in 2007 and 2008. In 2005, Amen was a member of the Rush's Colorado State Cup Championship and U.S. Youth Soccer Association Region IV finalist team.

"Caley is a strong midfielder who is excellent in the air," Gerace said. "Her personality is sweet and friendly and I think she's going to fit well with our team. I'm glad to have her and very excited about the impact she can make on this program."

bassettBay Area native Gail Bassett joins the Pioneers from Lynbrook High School in San Jose. A defender, Bassett was named the Vikings' Most Valuable Player and earned first-team all-league honors as a junior. Bassett also helped Lynbrook become the 2008 Adele Academic State Champions. A member of Central Valley Avalanche, Bassett served as the team captain for the 2008 season and was a 2007 Olympic Development Program Northern California pool player.

"Gail will be a great addition to our current lineup in the back," Gerace said. "She is a very good distributor and dominates in the air. She has great technical skills and will also find success in the classroom."

elmsCommunity college transfer Kristen Elms joins the Pioneers from Diablo Valley College. Hailing from Concord, Elms is a forward who set a new program record for the Vikings with 21 goals as a sophomore and 28 career goals. Elms served as a captain for Diablo Valley and earned Big 8 Conference Offensive Most Valuable Player honors, a first-team All-Big 8 selection and a conference Player of the Week nod during the 2009 season. As a sophomore, her 47 points on 21 goals and five assists ranked 13th among California community college players. Elms was a captain at Clayton Valley High School during her prep playing days, earning second-team all-league honors as a junior. During her senior season, Elms tied the school record for hat tricks in a season, was named first-team all-league and took home offensive player of the year honors. Elms played her club soccer with Diablo FC, serving as captain in her final season.

"Kristen is an excellent ball handler," Gerace said. "She's not afraid to take players on and will complement our returning forwards. She has a great work rate and has the personality to fit well with our team."

brawleyA central midfielder from La Mesa, Katie Brawley is currently a senior at Helix Charter School. As a junior, Brawley helped guide the Highlanders to a CIF San Diego Section playoff appearance and a 12-4-2 record. This season, Helix made its second straight trip to the postseason, reaching the Division II sectional quarterfinals. Brawley plays her club soccer with San Diego United FC.

"Katie is a natural leader on the field and is a great ball distributor," Gerace said. "She reads the game well and has a great passion for the game."

With Amen, Bassett, Elms and Brawley already on board for 2010, Gerace expects to continue to build the signing class with additional players as the signing period continues. The new additions will join a Pioneer squad that lost just two seniors to graduation and welcomes back a slew of veterans, including starting keeper Nina Cefalo and leading scorers Zuly Diaz and Shianna Falk. With a combination of experience and depth, Cal State East Bay looks set to make a name for itself in its second season in Division II and the CCAA in 2010.
