Cal State East Bay Set to Resume CCAA Play This Weekend

HAYWARD, Calif. - Following a non-conference win over Patten University, the Pioneer baseball team will resume CCAA play with a four-game series with Cal State Monterey Bay on April 2-3. The two teams will play a noon doubleheader on April 2 at Cal State Monterey Bay. The series will conclude on April 3 with an 11:00 a.m. doubleheader at Cal State East Bay.
Cal State East Bay is 6-18 in CCAA action and 11-21-1 overall. The Pioneers have won five of their last six home games. East Bay’s last two victories have come by walk-off home runs. As a team, the Pioneers are hitting .286 and have a .960 fielding percentage.
Stephen Gatehouse leads the Pioneers in hitting with a .369 batting average. In a four-game series against Sonoma State last weekend, Gatehouse batted .444, with six runs scored, a game tying home run and walk-off homer. Nick McManus is batting .358 and tops the Pioneers with 12 doubles and 29 RBIs.
Levi Josewski, hitting .298 after 28 games, has a team-high six home runs including a walk-off homer against Patten University on March 31. Alex Anicich is batting .296 for the season. Charlie Sharrer, having a solid freshman campaign, is hitting .292 with 15 runs scored and 21 RBIs. Devin Grigg is batting .287 with 28 runs scored, 21 RBIs, and four home runs.
Grigg has performed well on the mound with a 2-1 record and a 3.75 ERA. He has four saves as the Pioneers closer. Starter Paul Jinkens is 2-2 with 31 strikeouts in 44 innings. Aaron Hannigan, with a 3-1 record, has a staff-best 33 strikeouts. In his last two outings against San Francisco State and Sonoma State, senior Matt McCormick has allowed four earned runs with eight strikeouts in 15 innings.
Cal State Monterey Bay comes into the four-game series with a 2-22 record in CCAA play. The Otters are 6-27 for the season. Cal State Monterey Bay lost to Cal State East Bay, 7-5 on February 10 in a non-conference game. The Otters are led in hitting by Brent Sargenti with a .349 batting average.
