Pioneers Come From Behind To Top Cal Poly Pomona, 9-8

HAYWARD, Calif. - In their most dramatic comeback of the season, the Pioneer baseball team defeated Cal Poly Pomona 9-8 in a CCAA contest on April 16.

The Broncos took advantage of four Pioneer errors to lead 7-1 after four innings. Pomona’s Stephen Gonzalez had a two-run single in the first while Tyson Edwards hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. East Bay scored a single run in the seventh on a home run off the bat of James McShane.

Trailing 7-2, the Pioneers staged their biggest comeback of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning. Alex Anicich opened the inning with a base hit, followed by a Nick McManus single. Aaron Brown walked to load the bases for Devin Grigg, whose sacrifice fly scored Anicich to cut the Pomona lead to 7-3.

With two outs, McShane’s infield hit scored McManus before Jake Walter reached on an error to reload the bases. Richie Gonzalez was hit by a pitch allowing Brown to score with the third run of the inning. Stephen Gatehouse reached on another Bronco error scoring McShane and Walter to tie the game. Batting for the second time in the inning, Anicich hit a 2-2 pitch for a double which scored Gonzalez and Gatehouse to give the Pioneers a 9-7 lead.

Cal Poly Pomona scored a run in the ninth and had runners on first and second before Grigg got the final out on a fielder’s choice.

Anicich had a big day at the plate going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. McShane went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs driven in. Grigg had two hits and two stolen bases giving him 21 for the season.

Jensen Torres had three hits for the Broncos while Gonzalez drove in three runs.

Pioneer reliever Keith Schwecke picked up the victory while Grigg recorded his fifth save of the season.

Cal State East Bay improves to 10-19 in CCAA play and 17-24-1 overall. Cal Poly Pomona stands at 12-17 in CCAA action and 20-22 for the season.

The two teams will play a doubleheader on April 17 at Cal State East Bay. The first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
