Pioneers Split Series with Cal Poly Pomona After 13-8 Loss

HAYWARD, Calif. -
Cal Poly Pomona earned a four-game series split by defeating Cal State East Bay 13-8 on April 18.

The Broncos parlayed five singles into three runs in the first inning and added to more in the third on a two-run home run by Marcus Makia.

East Bay scored twice in the bottom of the third as Levi Josewski hit a two-run homer, his team leading 10th blast of the season.

Jenzen Torres extended the Broncos lead to 8-3 with a three-run home run in the fourth inning. The Pioneers answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth as Jake Walter, Alex Anicich, and Nick McManus all had run scoring singles.

East Bay closed the deficit to 8-7 with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Cal Poly Pomona added a run in the sixth and scored three insurance runs in the eighth highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Travis Taijeron.

The Pioneers banged out 18 hits, but stranded 10 base runners. McManus and Charlie Sharrer each had three hits while Stephen Gatehouse, Anicich, and Josewski all had two.

East Bay received a good outing from reliever Cody Hazen who threw two shutout innings with no hits allowed and recorded three strikeouts.

Cal Poly Pomona is 14-18 in CCAA play and 22-23 overall while Cal State East Bay stands at 11-21 in CCAA action and 18-26-1 for the season.

The Pioneers will play at Sonoma State on April 20 in a non-conference game.
