Pioneers Split Doubleheader to Take Series with Cal State Monterey Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. - Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay split a pair of high-scoring games on Saturday, with the Otters winning the opener, 18-10, while the Pioneers captured the second contest, 15-6.

In the first game, the Otters erupted for seven runs in the second inning with the big blow a two-run home run off the bat of Nolan Murray.

Trailing 12-1, the Pioneers scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth as Nick McManus hit a two-run homer and Levi Josewski scored on an infield out. The Pioneers scored six runs in the last three innings, but came up short in the first game.

Josewski was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate while Charlie Sharrer drove in three runs.

In the second game, the Pioneers banged out 21 hits en route to the 15-6 victory. East Bay scored twice in the second and added three more runs in the third. Sharrer had a run scoring double in the second while Devin Grigg drove in a pair of runs with a single in the third inning.

The Pioneer proceeded to score 10 runs in the following three innings. Alex Anicich doubled to score Stephen Gatehouse and Richie Gonzalez in the Pioneers four-run, fourth inning. Gatehouse drove in two runs with a double in the fifth and added a run-scoring single in the sixth inning.

Pioneer starting hurler Aaron Hannigan improved to 4-1 for the season as he allowed no earned runs on eight hits and recorded a season-high eight strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Grigg broke a school record with five stolen bases in a game while Gatehouse and McManus each had four hits and drove in four and three runs respectively.

The Pioneers took three out of four games in the series and improved to 9-19 in CCAA play and 14-22-1 overall.
