Pioneer baseball plans "Hits for Haiti" fundraiser

  • April 13, 2010

The Cal State East Bay baseball team will host a "Hits for Haiti" fundraiser April 24 during the first game of a conference doubleheader at Cal State San Bernardino. The event will raise money to help relief efforts in Haiti following the devastating earthquake in January.

"It is important to me for our student-athletes to realize that they have a wonderful opportunity to grow and develop in an educational and athletic environment, while the Haitian people have had to endure severe conditions and many tragedies due to the earthquake," Cal State East Bay Head Baseball Coach Dirk Morrison said. "Through this event, we hope to bring awareness to our players and fans while making a difference in the lives of others."

Participating fans will be able to pledge money for each hit, run, strikeout, 1-2-3 inning, double play or defensive assist which the Pioneers accumulate during the game against the Coyotes. The team goal is to raise $500 toward the cause. Pledge cards will be available Friday through Sunday at the Pioneers' home series against Cal Poly Pomona at Pioneer Field and in the Athletic Department marketing office in Warren Hall, UM21 through April 23.

The fundraiser was created by SCORE International, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization which has already sent food, medicine, clothing and water to Haiti to assist thousands of displaced youth. Former University of Kentucky baseball coach and American Baseball Coaches Hall of Famer Keith Madison, who serves as SCORE International's National Baseball Director, coordinates the organization's baseball outreach programs and brought the "Hits for Haiti" program to the attention of the Cal State East Bay baseball staff.

"Our team is joining other intercollegiate programs and baseball players to give support," Morrison said. "We hope the 'Hits for Haiti' donations will help improve this tragic situation. The Haitian people must not be forgotten and resources are crucial to the restoration of the country."

Final totals for each of the pledge categories will be available on the Cal State East Bay Athletics Web site by April 26. Checks can be made out to "SCORE International" with a memo indicating "Hits for Haiti." Donations are due to the Pioneer baseball office by May 5.
