Davis Leads Pioneers at First Day of CCAA Championships

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay men's golf team opened the 2010 CCAA Championships on Monday, finishing the day tied for seventh place. Junior Wes Davis led the Pioneers through the first two rounds and is tied for 10th heading into the final round at Hunter Ranch Golf Course.

Davis started the day off with a 3-under 69 in the opening round, good for third place through the first 18 holes. The Littleton, Colo., native shot a 3-over 75 in the second round, finishing the day with an even 144. The first round saw Davis notch an eagle and five birdies, while he birdied four holes in the second round.

Senior Jordan Cimino was second on the team with a two-round total of 152, including a 1-over 73 in the first round, finishing the day in a tie for 30th overall. Sophomore Justin Tambunting shot 158 through the first two rounds, while freshman Andrew Walters was two shots behind at 160. Junior Steven Shutler rounded out the group with a 173 on the day.

Davis was five-under on par-5 holes in the first two rounds and finished the day as one of just five players to record an eagle. Tambunting joined Davis on that list with a first-round eagle on the par-5 sixth.

No. 22 Cal State Monterey Bay combined to post a nine-under 567 through the first two rounds to finish the day in first place. No. 10 Cal State Stanislaus is just one stroke behind in second, while No. 20 Sonoma State sits in third place at one-under through 36 holes.

The Otters' John Jackson and the Warriors' Jonathan Earl Cockerill head into the final round tied for first place, each shooting 5-under 139 in the first two rounds, including matching scores in both rounds. The Seawolves' Alex Marry posted the low score of the day, a 5-under 67 in the second round to move up from 37th to a tie for 15th overall.

Tomorrow's second round is set to begin at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Shutler will be in the first pairing, while Walters will tee of at 7:38, Tambunting will begin at 7:46, Cimino at 7:54 and Davis at 8:02 a.m. Live scoring for the final round will be available .
