Cal State East Bay Finishes Eighth at CCAA Championships

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay men's golf team finished the 2010 CCAA Championships in eighth place after scoring a final-round 304 on Tuesday. The Pioneers were led by freshman Andrew Walters' 1-over 73 on the final day, while senior Jordan Cimino and junior Wes Davis paced the team through 54 holes, tying for 22nd overall.
Walters carded three birdies in the final round, rebounding from a 16-over day on Monday to finish in a tie for 33rd overall. Cimino posted a 2-over 74 on the day after shooting a 73 and a 79 in the first two rounds on the opening day of the tournament. The Littleton, Colo., native posted four birdies on the day and finished the event among the top scorers on par-3 holes.
Davis, who led the Pioneers with a three-under 69 in the first round and finished Monday in third place overall with an even 144 through 36 holes, struggled on Tuesday, shooting a 10-over 82 to finish out the tournament. Davis finished as one of just six players in the event to record an eagle, posting a three on the par-5 sixth hole in the first round on Monday.
Sophomre Justin Tambunting and junior Steven Shutler joined Walters and Cimino in improving on their second-round scores, posting a 79 and a 78, respectively. Tambunting finished with a combined score of 237 to take 35th overall, while Shutler took 10 strokes off his round-two score with a six-over 78 in the final round.
Cal State Monterey Bay captured the team title with an eight-under 856, beating Cal State Stanislaus by a single stroke. Last year's NCAA and CCAA Champion, Sonoma State finished 18 strokes back of the Warriors with an 11-over 875 to take third.
The Otters' John Jackson maintained his lead from day one, collecting individual medalist honors with a third-round 69 to finish eight under par. A pair of Warriors, in Teddy Schrier and Jonathan Earl Cockerill, finished the tournament tied for second at four under. Despite finishing in a tie for 22nd, Sonoma State's Alex Marry carded the lowest score of the tournament, a five-under 67 in the second round.
With the season at a close, the Pioneers will bid farewell to two seniors in Cimino and Greg Hylton.
