Cal State East Bay Finishes 12th at Hanny Stanislaus Invitational

The Cal State East Bay men's golf team finished 12th in a field of 17 teams at the 37th Annual Hanny Stanislaus Invitational at the Turlock Golf and Country Club. The Pioneers were led by junior Wes Davis' eight-over 224, good for 34th overall.

Davis had the Pioneers' best round of the tournament on the final day, shooting a one-over 73 to finish in a tie for 34th place in the field of nearly 90 competitors. Senior Jordan Cimino shot a five-over 77 in the third round to finish with a 14-over 230 for the tournament, which was good for second on the team and a tie for 51st in the individual standings.

Sophomore Justin Tambunting shot a 76 in the final round and took six shots off his first-round score for the Pioneers' second-best score of the tournament with a second-round 74. His total of 230 left him in a tie with Cimino for second on the team and 51st overall. Freshman Andrew Walters took four shots off his second-round 80 to shoot a four-over 76 on the final day of the event, finishing with a 234 to tie for 62nd. Junior Steve Shutler rounded out the team with a 238 overall, shooting an 81 in the final round to tie for 70th.

The host Warriors, ranked 10th in Division II, tied with Cal State San Bernardino with a team total of seven-over 871 over three rounds. The Coyotes' Gene Webster, Jr., took the individual title with an impressive, 18-under 198 overall, including a tournament-best nine-under 63 in the final round on Tuesday.

Grand Canyon took third, No. 4 Chico State finished fourth and No. 22 Cal State Monterey Bay rounded out the top five teams. Though Cal State Dominguez Hills finished 11th in the team standings, the Toros' Ryan Indovina and Cavin McCall took second and third in the individual standings.

Cal State East Bay will now prepare for the 2010 CCAA Championships next week. The tournament will feature three nationally-ranked teams in Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State and Cal State Monterey Bay and will be held at Hunter Ranch in Paso Robles, Calif., April 18-20.
