Pioneers To Meet Chico State in Final Home Series

  • April 15, 2010

HAYWARD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay softball team is set to make its final home appearance of the 2010 season this weekend, hosting Chico State for a four-game series at Pioneer Field. The Pioneers (12-28, 5-23 CCAA) will meet the Wildcats for the series-opening doubleheader on Friday before honoring its two seniors, Rachelle Boone and Sarah Davini, prior to Saturday's Senior Day doubleheader.

East Bay is looking to snap an eight-game losing streak that began just last week. The Pioneers played eight games in the span of five days after being forced to reschedule their series against Humboldt State. During the series with the Jacks, CSUEB lost two games in the bottom of the seventh inning, and last weekend, the team was held to just four runs in four losses to Cal State Stanislaus.

The Pioneers have seen some bright spots in the past eight games, however, in the form of junior center fielder Nikki Freiberg, sophomore second baseman Breezy Johnson and junior designated player Dani Foster. Freiberg batted .364 during that span, driving in three runs and scoring four to lead the Pioneers, while Johnson drove in four and scored twice. Foster, a recent addition to the lineup, saw three starts and four appearances in the last eight, hitting .500 and boasting an on-base percentage of .600.

In the circle, freshman Lauren Zweigle has been a strikeout machine, sitting down 10 batters in relief in the opener against the Warriors and 27 in the last eight games. Zweigle leads the conference with 114 Ks in 132.2 innings pitched, she also boasts a staff-best 3.70 earned run average with a 5-14 record. Meanwhile, junior Cat Schorn carries a 7-13 record into the weekend, throwing 120.1 innings in 32 appearances.

Davini and Boone will be playing their final games at Pioneer Field on Saturday. A Hayward native, Davini is in her second season playing for the Pioneers after transferring from Humboldt State. During her time at East Bay, Davini has made 62 starts, leads the 2010 squad in runs and on-base percentage, and was an All-Cal Pac honorable mention selection as a junior. Boone is in her first season at East Bay, coming from Vermont where she was a junior captain. During the 2010 season, Boone has started all but two games behind the plate and currently leads the team with 19 RBI.

Chico State (20-17, 13-14) comes into the weekend in seventh place in the conference standings and is coming off a series split with San Francisco State last week. The low-scoring series saw the Wildcats get shut out twice, while picking up a 3-0 win in the opener and a 2-0 victory in the finale.

Chico is the top defensive team in the conference, boasting a .971 fielding percentage and just 32 errors. Senior second baseman Charlotte Honciano is pacing the Wildcats at the plate, batting .350 with three homers on the year. Senior Christine Johnson leads the team with 20 runs scored, while sophomore Rachel Failla has driven in 18.

The Wildcat pitching staff features three hurlers with ERAs under 3.00, led by freshman Kacie McCarthy's 2.46 ERA. Sophomore Jessica McDermott boasts a 9-6 record, 2.84 ERA and a team-leading 97 strikeouts on the year. The pair has combined to toss eight shutouts and 23 complete games this season.

The Pioneers and Wildcats are set to kick off the series on Friday at 1 p.m. at Pioneer Field. The finale will begin with Senior Day festivities prior to a noon start on Saturday.
