HAYWARD, Calif. - After a hard-fought game that saw the two teams combine for 18 major fouls, the Cal State East Bay women's water polo team came out on the losing end of an 18-12 decision with No. 17 UC San Diego on Friday evening at Pioneer Pool. The Pioneers (20-10, 9-2 WWPA) and Tritons kept the game close through two and a half quarters before UCSD pulled away in the final 12 minutes of the match.

UCSD got off to a quick start, opening the game with three goals in just over two minutes. The Pioneers joined in at the 5:39 mark, as freshman utility Claire Pierce cut the lead to two and followed with her second goal just a minute later to bring East Bay within one. Freshman Chelsie Bryan scored the Pioneers' third-straight goal at the 3:26 mark to tie things up 3-3.

Cal State East Bay took its first lead with just under three minutes left in the first quarter, getting the first of three goals from junior two meter Liz Warren. The Pioneers would take a 5-3 lead into the second period after junior Danielle Comforti scored with just 43 seconds remaining in the first.

Pierce continued the scoring streak, putting away Cal State East Bay's sixth-straight to open the second quarter and give it a 6-3 advantage. After UCSD drew a kick out with 6:40 left in the quarter, the Tritons scored their first goal in nearly seven and a half minutes of play, closing the CSUEB lead to two, 6-4, and beginning a 5-1 run to end the first half.

After UCSD tied the game at six on a goal from Stephanie Heinrich with 3:33 to play in the second, the Pioneers answered with Pierce's fourth score of the day to regain a 7-6 lead. The advantage was short-lived, however, as the Tritons ended the first half with back-to-back goals to take an 8-7 lead into the break.

The decisive third quarter began with a penalty against the Pioneers that led to a five-meter goal from UCSD's T.C. Coles that gave the Tritons a 9-7 lead and kicked off a quarter that saw them outscore CSUEB 6-2. Senior utility Jenna Casady responded almost immediately, drawing the Pioneers back within one, 9-8, with 5:45 left in the third quarter.

UCSD would go on to score five straight goals to take a 14-8 lead in a physical period that saw the teams combine for six kickouts, including matching minor misconduct fouls for each team and a yellow card on the East Bay bench. The Pioneers finally broke through with just six seconds left in the quarter, closing the UCSD lead to five, 14-9, on Warren's second goal of the day.

The Tritons opened the final period with a pair of goals, including the fourth of the day for leading-scorer Kirsten Bates. Trailing 16-9, the Pioneers rebounded, getting a pair from Comforti and Warren to pull back within five, 16-11. Heinrich answered for the Tritons and Casady followed with her second goal to close the gap to 17-12, but UCSD would finish the scoring to cap the 18-12 victory.

The loss is just the second conference defeat of the season for the Pioneers, who were led by Pierce's four goals on the day. Warren added three, while Casady and Comforti each scored a pair. UCSD was paced by Bates' five, while three others each recorded a hat trick.

Prior to the game, the Pioneers honored their four seniors, Lauren Merrill, Jenna Casady, Lauren Griffin and Brianna Finney, who played in their final home game in the red and black. All community college transfers, each player has made an impact at Cal State East Bay in the past two years.

Cal State East Bay will look to rebound tomorrow, when they travel to Fresno to face Fresno Pacific and a Fresno masters squad. The Pioneers and Sunbirds will meet at Clovis East High School at 1 p.m., with the second game to follow at 3:30 p.m.
