The new Student Services Administration building, a project under construction for nearly three years, will open its doors to the Cal State East Bay community soon after the Division of Administration and Finance moves in to the 100,000-square-foot facility starting June 17.

With its opening, the main entrance of the campus will begin to shift to the east side of campus, facing Hayward Boulevard, as envisioned in the recently approved campus master plan.

Construction of the $40 million project, which was funded through general obligation bonds approved by voters, began in July 2007 with the fencing off and clearing of land. The building is located on the east side of the Hayward campus adjacent to the Valley Business and Technology Center and the College of Science.

The new SA building, however, won’t be fully occupied and ready to provide all university services until after other university administration departments – including the Office of the President; Office of University Advancement; Division of Planning, Enrollment Management and Student Affairs; and Office of Academic Affairs – complete their moves from Warren Hall in mid- to late-July.

In all, approximately 350 people will be housed in the new building.

While construction workers complete the finishing touches on the interior, the outside of the four-story building is essentially done, according to Jim Zavagno, director of planning design and construction.

“We just need to do some landscaping, but all of the construction fences have been removed and anyone can walk by the structure and look through the windows,” Zavagno said.
