Sharrer Named Freshman of the Year as Four Pioneers Earn CCAA Honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Charlie Sharrer earned Freshman of the Year honors and Devin Grigg, Stephen Gatehouse and Nick McManus earned spots on the 2010 All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Teams announced on May 5. The quartet helped the Pioneers to a 23-29-1 overall record, a 16-24 mark in conference play and an eighth-place finish in league play in their first season in Division II.
Sharrer, who prepped at Palmdale High School, batted .329 with 29 runs scored, 13 doubles, five home runs and 33 RBI in 39 CCAA games. In his final at bat in conference play, Sharrer hit a walk-off, two-run home run in a Pioneer 8-6 victory over Cal State Los Angeles.
Sharrer had 18 multi-hit games in conference play and becomes the second Pioneer athlete to receive CCAA Freshman of the Year recognition, joining women's basketball player Lauren Lucchesi as the league's top freshmen in their respective sports.
Grigg earned second team all-conference honors after hitting .293 with 30 runs scored and 22 RBI. The senior led the CCAA with 20 stolen bases, while going 3-1 on the mound with four saves.
McManus, a junior, received honorable mention recognition after finishing second in the CCAA in RBI (50). The Temecula, Calif., native also finish third in the conference in total bases (102), fourth in batting average (.419) and hits (65), fifth in on-base percentage (.483) and seventh in slugging percentage (.658).
Gatehouse was also named honorable mention. The senior from Pleasanton hit .352 in conference play and tied for fourth in the CCAA with 45 runs scored. Gatehouse also ranked 10th in the conference with 21 walks.
UC San Diego's Brandon Gregorich was named the CCAA Most Valuable Player, while teammate Matt Rossman took Pitcher of the Year honors and UCSD Head Coach Dan O'Brien took home the Coach of the Year award. Cal State Dominguez Hills' Abel Martinez collected Newcomer of the Year honors. The Tritons and Toros enter this week's CCAA Championships as the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively, and will meet third-seeded Cal State San Bernardino and No. 4-seeded Chico State in the three-day tournament.
