Sharrer's Walkoff Homerun Hands Pioneers Saturday Sweep of Cal State LA

Pioneer junior third baseman Nick McManus broke the Cal State East Bay record for hits in a season on Saturday.

Charlie Sharrer hit a walk-off, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth as the Pioneers defeated Cal State Los Angeles 8-6 in the second game to complete a doubleheader sweep on May 1.

The Pioneers overcame a 5-1 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Aaron Brown tripled home James McShane with the first run. Stephen Gatehouse infield out scored Brown. Alex Anicich followed with a triple and came home on Nick McManus single. Levi Josewski hit his team leading 14th home run to cap the five-run sixth inning.

Cal State LA pushed across a run in the top of the seven as Sam Wiley’s single scored Mario Romero who doubled with two outs.

Sharrer hit his fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth to give the Pioneers the victory and the doubleheader sweep.

Devin Grigg pitched a scoreless eighth inning to improve his record to 5-1. Grigg went 3-for-5 at the plate. Pioneer starting hurler John Volk allowed six runs on nine hits and tossed 136 pitches in eight innings.

Catcher Aaron Brown was 3-for-3 at the plate while McShane had a pair of hits and scored twice.

In the first game, the Pioneers scored six runs in the seventh inning and added three more insurance runs in the eighth to defeat the Golden Eagles 13-8.

The Pioneers Nick McManus broke a school record with 79 hits in a season. McManus was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and four RBI. Joey Madden held the school record with 78 hits in a season set in 1992.

McManus hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to give the Pioneers a 4-3 lead. Trailing 5-4, the Pioneers broke the game wide open with six runs on two hits in the bottom of the seventh.

Sharrer hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the eight to give the Pioneers a 13-7 lead.

Pioneer starting hurler Paul Jinkens improved to 5-5 for the season as he allowed five earned runs and recorded four strikeouts in eight innings. He threw 154 pitches.

Sharrer knocked in four runs while McShane and Josh Rush each had two hits.

Jesus Campos had a big doubleheader for the Golden Eagles going 6-for-8 at the plate with three runs scored, two home runs and four RBI.

The Pioneers will go for the four-game sweep as they host the Golden Eagles on May 2 at 11 a.m. East Bay will honor their 10 seniors in a pre-game ceremony at 10:30 a.m.
