CSUEB boosts regional economy by $415 million, report finds

A new report on the California State University system’s statewide economic impact reveals that California State University, East Bay contributes $415 million annually to the regional economy: a return of more than $5 for every state dollar invested.
The report, “Working for California: The Impact of the California State University System,” also underscores the long-lasting value of a Cal State East Bay education, concluding that approximately $1.6 billion of earnings by alumni in the East Bay area is directly attributable to their college degrees and creates an additional $2.5 billion of industry activity throughout the state.
"This report documents the central role that California State University, East Bay plays in the economic health and vibrancy of our region," said Mohammad H. Qayoumi, university president. "In addition to detailing the magnitude of our contributions in meeting critical workforce needs, it demonstrates an impressive return on the taxpayers' investment in our work."
“Working for California” was released May 10. It documents that the 23-campus CSU system generates $17 billion in economic activity directly from spending that yields nearly $1 billion in state and local taxes annually. That impact is more than $70.4 billion and nearly $5 billion in state and local taxes annually if higher alumni earnings are counted (the difference in earnings between a CSU grad and a person without a college degree).
The return on investment ratio rises to nearly $20 in total spending per dollar of state investment, when the impact of enhanced earnings for CSU graduates is included.
Additional CSUEB economic impact highlights include:
* Annual spending of $266 million generates a total regional impact of $415 million ($472 million statewide).
* CSUEB’s impact sustains more than 3,200 jobs in the region and more than 4,000 statewide.
* More than $23.8 million in local and $26.8 million in state tax revenue flow from Cal State East Bay’s operation.
Cal State East Bay has been found to make other positive contributions to the region, including:
* CSUEB’s teacher education program, which is a leading producer of credentialed teachers for the state and graduates more math and science teachers than any other CSU campus.
* The university’s online learning program, which leads the CSU by offering nine bachelor’s and master’s degree programs as well as more than 40 certificate programs and almost 60 other online programs.
* Its nursing program, which has received numerous grants from regional hospitals and health care foundations to help educate and train health care professionals to meet the state’s critical shortage.
“Access to college is the key to better jobs, higher wages and a brighter future,” said CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed. “We know that students educated at our university not only improve their own condition but that of their families and the community around them.”
