Rec Center: The new Student Recreation & Wellness Center will open later this year, providing students with a fitness center, track, basketball courts and activity areas in 53,000 square feet. This state-of-the-art “green” facility is located on the site of the former Student Services Hub, near the new Pioneer Heights residence area. It was developed with cooperation from Associated Students Inc., and construction was financed by student fees.
SSA Building: The long-planned 100,000 square-foot Student Services and Administration Building will open this summer adjacent to the Valley Business and Technology Center. Work on this much-needed building, funded by state bonds, was briefly halted in 2009 but was completed on schedule in spring 2010. The SSA building (pictured) will become the official entrance to the Hayward campus, with new signage and landscaping welcoming visitors and students.
Parking expansion: The first campus parking structure is now in the design phase. Early plans put the 1,100-space structure at the corner of West Loop and Harder roads, near Pioneer Heights and Pioneer Stadium. Construction is expected to begin within the year, to be completed in 2011.

The Latest from Concord
Day of the Teacher: Concord hosted its eighth Annual Day of The Teacher event with keynote speaker and CSUEB alumna Joell Marchese. The theme of this year’s conference was “Pursuing New Frontiers” with a focus on using technology to reach students in the classroom. Marchese serves as a science leader to the San Ramon school district, has written over forty grants that provide mobile laptops, and interactive whiteboards to the school district, student response systems, and graphing calculators to middle school children. Students and teachers alike noted the conference as insightful commenting that they were “inspired (once again) to continue teaching and be a better instructor”.
Student Life at Concord: Arthur Jenkins joined the Concord campus staff to help support student life and activities — the first full time position dedicated to Concord students.
“We believe that Concord students have the same right to services as all other Concord Students at Cal State East Bay,” says Bob Williams, executive director of Associated Students Inc. Jenkins served as a Student Advisor in Student Life and Leadership and as a general education advisor at the Hayward campus before joining the Concord team.He hit the ground running and has already implemented programming such as Live@Five, which brings bands to campus regularly during the quarter, adding free Yoga classes for recreation, securing a table tennis table for students, and updating the student lounge with a flat screen television. Alumni and friends are welcome to visit and see the new changes or attend any event.
