Claycordians, watch for coyotes

If you’re out and about in the hills of CLAYCORD, watch out for the coyotes!

We received this email from a fellow CLAYCORDIAN, who tells us a story, and has a few great tips if you plan to hike around the hills near Crystyl Ranch/Lime Ridge….

My husband takes a daily walk around the soccer fields near Cal State Hayward. Today, he was approaching a pair of coyotes that normally scatter, but this time stood their ground.

He assumed they might be guarding young coyote pups, so he wisely diverted away from them. He said it’s unusual to see coyotes in daylight on his walks, let alone ones so bold.

We live right below Crystyl Ranch and you can hear the coyotes howling at night in the hills around us.

We also coincidentally are missing one of our older male cats who we suspect may have been a coyote victim (we checked with Animal Services & he wasn’t picked up as being hit or taken to the shelter, plus he’s not a “roamer”).

Also, I saw a news clip on coyotes in the South Bay getting bolder with people, preying on their pets (coyotes seen with cats/small dogs in their mouths, etc.) and setting up dens right near suburban back yards.

The TV clip had some tips that might be passed along to Claycordians:

    * Don’t leave dog/catfood outside

    * Walk your pet(s) on a short leash

    * Don’t let your pets out at night & watch them during the day if out in your yard
