2 x 1.4mW fuel cells for California University

Pacific Gas and Electric Company has placed an order with Connecticut company FuelCell Energy for 2 x 1.4 mW fuel cell power plants, to be installed on the campuses of California State University East Bay and San Francisco State University (SFSU).

The contract is worth $12.6m, including engineering, procurement and construction services. The fuel cells should be operational by 2011.

California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved the installation partly because it thought it would help advance the development and understanding of fuel cell technology.

Waste heat from the CSU East Bay fuel cell will be used for swimming pool heating and landscape irrigation, and waste heat from the SFSU fuel cell will be used for facility management.
