The Cal State East Bay Athletics Department and the Pioneer women’s volleyball team will host its second annual "Dig Pink" event to raise breast cancer awareness on Oct. 8, when the team will play host to Cal Poly Pomona at Pioneer Gym. Created by the Side-Out Foundation, the Dig Pink event is held annually during October and joins volleyball teams across the country to help raise money for research and awareness about the disease.

"Our fans were huge supporters of our Dig Pink effort last year and we are looking forward to an even more success this year," CSUEB volleyball Head Coach Jim Spagle said. "Whether it is dollars or pennies, every donation helps and goes to a great cause. We promise to dig everything in sight!"

Fans will have the opportunity to purchase pink wristbands for a small donation during the event and are encouraged to wear pink to the game. The first 100 Cal State East Bay students in pink will receive a free Pioneer Pride t-shirt.

"The Pioneers are proud to be part of the collaborative efforts of all the CCAA institutions in this effort to raise awareness for breast cancer research," Director of Athletics Debby De Angelis said. "As part of our community engagement efforts, the Dig Pink initiative is a perfect fit for athletics. This is our second event and we are glad to be able to contribute to this great cause."

Dig Pink is one of the largest athletic fundraisers for breast cancer research. The Side-Out Foundation works to unify the sport of volleyball and the breast cancer awareness and education movement through year-round fundraising events, involvement with cancer survivor support organizations and clinical trials and work with USA Volleyball, the National Cancer Institute and the American Volleyball Coaches Association. This year, Side-Out has set a fundraising goal of $1,500,000 for the Dig Pink event and has nearly 800 college and high school teams set to participate.

The Pioneer Dig Pink event is set for Oct. 8 at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors (55 and over) and Cal State East Bay faculty and staff, and $2 for youth (17 and under). Admission is free for CSUEB students with ID.
