Pioneers finish eighth at Western Washington Invitational

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Cal State East Bay men's golf team placed eighth at the Western Washington Invitational on Sept. 28, finishing with a three round score of 15-over par-879 in the 15 team field. The Pioneers finished 14 strokes behind team champion Chico State.

Jeff Cornez led all Pioneer golfers and finished in a tie with four other golfers in 16th. Cornez shot a one-over-par 217 for the three rounds. The junior had his best round on Monday, shooting a two-under 70.

Nick Allen fired a three-over-par 219 to finish in a six-way tie for 22nd place, while AJ Warren shot a five-over-par 221 to join four other golfers in 29th.

Wes Davis finished in a three-way tie for 34th, shooting a team-best four-under 68 in the second round. Davis shot a six-over-par 222 in the tournament. Andy Quintero rounded out the team tied with two other golfers in 69th.

Cal State East Bay topped two CCAA teams at the tournament, finishing three strokes ahead of Cal State Stanislaus and 12 strokes up on UC San Diego.

The Pioneers return to action next week when they travel to the Grand Canyon Invitational at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz. The tournament is set to begin on Monday, Oct. 4.
