Pioneers score eight in shutout victory over Chaminade

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team finished its Hawai'i trip with a bang, scoring eight unanswered goals against Chaminade to top the Silver Swords, 8-0, on Monday afternoon. The win keeps the Pioneers (2-0-1) undefeated as they head into Friday's conference opener against Cal State Dominguez Hills at Pioneer Stadium.
CSUEB's scoring spree got started in the 17th minute when sophomore Shianna Falk fed fellow striker Zuly Diaz for the opening goal. Less than two minutes later, Falk was at it again, getting on the scoring end of an assist from senior midfielder Michelle Garcia to put the Pioneers up 2-0.
Falk added her second goal and fifth point of the game in the 23rd minute, this time getting the assist from senior Jennifer Lu. Freshman Gail Bassett notched her first career goal as a Pioneer in the 34th minute, scoring off a Michelle Quintero corner. Junior Ariana Nobrega gave East Bay a 5-0 lead just before the half, getting an assist from junior Eugénie Foote.
The Pioneers continued to roll in the second frame, with Quintero adding a goal in the first two minutes to take a 6-0 advantage. After 38 minutes without a goal, East Bay added two in the final six minutes. Freshman Shannon Fontes scored the first goal of her CSUEB career in the 85th before Nobrega notched her second of the day and Garcia added her fourth assist of the game.
East Bay held Chaminade to just three shots, while the Pioneers posted 25 shots of their own. Freshman Donna Williams and sophomore Sam Maldonado combined to make three saves in goal and record the Pioneers' second shutout of the season. Silver Swords keeper Marissa Minor made nine saves in the loss.
Nobrega paced the Pioneers with five shots and tied with Falk with five points in the game. Falk leads the team with three goals on the year, while Garcia's four assists are tops on the squad.
Cal State East Bay will put its undefeated record on the line when it hosts 2009 national runner up Cal State Dominguez Hills in its home opener at Pioneer Stadium. The Pioneers and the fourth-ranked Toros are set to meet at 4:30 p.m. on Friday before CSUEB hosts No. 14 Cal State LA on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
