Cal State East Bay edged by Otters, 2-1

SEASIDE,Calif. – A late goal from Cal State Monterey Bay gave the Otters a 2-1 win over the Cal State East Bay women's soccer team on Sunday at CSUMB Soccer Complex. The Pioneers (4-4-1, 2-4 CCAA) dropped their second straight match after allowing the game winner in the 87th minute.

Cal State East Bay got the scoring started early in the first half. In the 15th minute, Kara Yamamoto blasted a shot from 15 yards past CSUMB keeper Graciela Holguin into the left corner of the goal. The goal was Yamamoto's first of the season and gave the Pioneers the 1-0 lead.

The Otters responded with a goal from Natalie Argueta in the 27th minute. Gabriella Bozzo's throw in found Argueta inthe box, where she put her far-post shot past CSUEB keeper Donna Williams to tie the game at one goal apiece.

The two squads combined for just one shot following the Otter goal, ending the half locked in the 1-1 tie. Holguin made four saves and faced six shots in the half, while Williams needed one save on three shots to maintain the first-half draw.

The second half saw the Pioneers come out looking for a goal, taking three shots and forcing Holguin to make three saves in the first 10 minutes of the half. Despite throwing four shots at Holguin, East Bay could not find the back of the net.

Though they had only taken two shots through the first 40 minutes of the second frame, the Otters broke through the 1-1 tie in the 87th minute. After winning a free kick in the Pioneers' end, Sherene Thompson placed her kick over the defense for Andrea Davis, who finished with a shot into the right corner. Leading 2-1, Cal State Monterey Bay held on for the final three minutes to secure the victory.

Argueta paced the Otters with three shots on the day, while Holguin made eight saves to pick up the win. Yamamoto, Michelle Garcia and Shianna Falk each notched three shots to lead the Pioneer offense. Williams made two saves in her second loss of the season.

Cal State East Bay returns to action on Oct. 1, when it plays host to Cal Poly Pomona. The Pioneers and Broncos will meet at 4:30 p.m. at Pioneer Stadium.
