Cal State East Bay topped by San Francisco State, 2-0

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – It was a tale of two halves for the Cal State East Bay women's soccer team in a 2-0 loss to San Francisco State on Friday afternoon at Cox Stadium in San Francisco. The Pioneers (4-3-1, 2-3-0 CCAA) allowed two second-half goals and could not find the back of the net in their first loss away from home this season.
"I was happy with our play in the first half, it was an even game – both teams had opportunities to score," CSUEB Head Coach Amy Gerace said. "Unfortunately, the same team didn't come out in the second half. We didn't do a good job winning balls and establishing a rhythm. SFSU out-hustled us and took advantage of our mistakes. Luckily we get another chance this weekend to get back on the field and play."
Though the first half was scoreless, both teams had plenty of scoring chances. The Pioneers' first came early on, as junior Eugénie Foote forced SFSU keeper Annicia Jones to make her first save of the game on a shot just 1:35 into the match. After a pair of CSUEB corner kicks were cleared away, the Gators answered with a shot of their own in the 12th minute.
The Pioneers had one of their best chances in the 15th minute, when junior Kara Yamamoto hit the post and junior Ariana Nobrega's shot on the rebound went wide. Though the Gators threatened, East Bay freshman keeper Donna Williams made her only save of the first half in the 34th minute, on a shot from Michelle Spinner. Williams had her backline of Shannon Fontes, Gail Bassett, Jasmine Stephens and Breanna Baker to thank for that after they blocked three Gator strikes in the opening frame.
Jones made two saves and Williams made just one to maintain the shutout in the first half. Both teams took six shots and both won a pair of corner kicks and headed to the break locked in a scoreless draw.
The second half saw the Gators come out reenergized and ready to score. SFSU did just that two minutes into the half, getting a goal from Nicole Vanni in the 48th minute. After getting a cross in the box from Michelle Kay, Vanni finished to put the Gators up 1-0 early in the second frame.
With the 1-0 advantage, San Francisco State looked for more, while controlling possession and the pace of play. The Pioneers only took one shot in the second frame, a Michelle Garcia strike that sailed high in the 53rd minute.
Meanwhile, the Gators threw more shots at Williams after the first goal, scoring their second of the game on their seventh shot of the half. This time, Vanni set up Spinner with a cross that she finished into the back post to give SFSU a 2-0 lead in the 78th minute. The two-goal advantage was all SFSU needed, as it held on for the win.
Jones finished the game with two saves in the shutout victory, while Williams made three saves in her first loss of the season. The Gators finished with a 14-7 shot advantage, led by Vanni's four strikes and three points on the day. Nobrega and Foote, who notched two shots apiece, paced the Pioneer offense.
Cal State East Bay returns to action on Sunday when they travel to Cal State Monterey Bay. The Pioneers and Otters will kickoff at 11:30 a.m. at the CSUMB Soccer Complex in Seaside.
