Pioneers Set To Close Out Four-Match Homestand: The Cal State East Bay volleyball team will cap its current four-match homestand on Friday against Cal Poly Pomona and Saturday against No. 4 Cal State San Bernardino. The Pioneers (11-3, 6-3 CCAA) bring a three-match winning streak into the weekend that will see them take on the Broncos for Dig Pink Night before meeting last year’s national runner up in the Coyotes. Both matches are set for a 7 p.m. start at Pioneer Gym.

Last Week: The Pioneers built off a split weekend to end September with a pair of victories last weekend, downing Cal State Dominguez Hills in four sets before sweeping then-No. 23 Cal State LA on Saturday to improve to 11-3 overall and 6-3 in CCAA play. Freshman Katie Allen led the Pioneers in both matches, tying with Jit Athwal for the team lead with 11 kills in the win over the Toros before laying down 14 kills and hitting at a .429 clip against the Golden Eagles. The Pioneers also saw Athwal and Brianna Bryant tally nine kills apiece in the win, with Bryant posting a .500 hitting percentage.

Looking Ahead: Following this week’s home set, East Bay hits the road for a pair of matches next weekend. The Pioneers will meet Humboldt State on Oct. 15 before heading to Sonoma State on Oct. 16. CSUEB will then return home for a season-high five-match homestand that will feature rematches with the three CCAA teams it has fallen to this season.

Dig Pink to Raise Awareness: Friday’s matchup with Cal Poly Pomona will mark the Pioneers’ second annual “Dig Pink” event to raise breast cancer awareness. Created by the Side-Out Foundation, the Dig Pink event is held annually during October and joins volleyball teams across the country to help raise money for research and awareness about the disease. Fans will have the opportunity to purchase pink wristbands for a small donation during the event and are encouraged to wear pink to the game. The first 100 Cal State East Bay students in pink will receive a free Pioneer Pride t-shirt.

Scouting the Broncos: Cal Poly Pomona comes into the weekend with a 5-9 overall record and 3-6 mark in conference play. The Broncos are coming off a five-set win over Chico State that snapped a two-match losing streak. Pomona has three of its last five matches. The Broncos are led by Jessica Doerner’s 2.81 kills per game and Katie Colin’s 9.39 assists per game. Last year, the Broncos and Pioneers split two matches, with Pomona falling in three sets in Hayward in 2009.

Checking Out the Coyotes: The fourth-ranked Coyotes are the only team in the CCAA with an unblemished conference record, as they enter the weekend with a 12-1 record overall and a 9-0 mark in CCAA play. Cal State San Bernardino has won nine straight matches and is paced by CCAA Player of the Week Jane Chafeh’s 4.05 kills per game. The Coyotes picked up two sweeps over the Pioneers in 2009.
