The Cal State East Bay volleyball team returns home this weekend, kicking off a five-game homestand against two teams that handed it losses earlier this season. Friday, the Pioneers meet Cal State Monterey Bay in a battle for second-place in the CCAA, while Saturday, East Bay hosts San Francisco State in the Battle of the Bay. Both games are set for a 7 p.m. first serve at Pioneer Gym. Friday's match is a Facebook Friday event, fans who show the Facebook coupon will receive a Pioneer water bottle. Saturday is a Black Out Night, fans are encouraged to wear black and students who wear black will receive a free Pioneer foam finger.

The Pioneer soccer teams have just two weeks remaining in the 2010 campaign and head to Southern California to meet Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona in doubleheader action on Friday and Sunday. Pioneer cross country will travel to Whittier on Saturday for the CCAA Preview Meet at Whittier Narrows Regional Park, where they will preview the course for the 2010 CCAA Championships. Finally, Cal State East Bay swimming opens its home campaign on Saturday, playing host to Mills College at noon at Pioneer Pool.

Pioneers Open Final Homestand with Bay Rivals: The 23rd-ranked Cal State East Bay volleyball team opens its final five-game homestand this weekend, playing host to Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State. The Pioneers (14-4, 9-4 CCAA) will be looking to avenge losses to both the Otters and Gators and to move ahead of CSUMB in the CCAA standings. East Bay will meet Monterey Bay on Friday night at 7 p.m. before meeting SFSU in the Battle of the Bay on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Pioneer Gym.

Last Week: Cal State East Bay picked up a pair of wins over Humboldt State and Sonoma State last weekend, picking up their sixth win in the last seven matches. The Pioneers won their third five-set match of the season against the Seawolves and were led by freshman Katie Allen’s 34 kills on the weekend. With the wins, the Pioneers moved into a tie for second place in the CCAA.

Looking Ahead: The Pioneers continue their season-high five-game homestand on Wednesday, when they host UC San Diego at 7 p.m. at Pioneer Gym. East Bay will then cap its final homestand of the season with matches against Chico State on Oct. 29 and Cal State Stanislaus on Oct. 30 for Senior Night.

Sitting Pretty: The weekend sweep over Humboldt State and Sonoma State last weekend, paired with losses by Cal State Monterey Bay, moved the Pioneers into a tie with the Otters for second in the CCAA. Both teams sit three games back of Cal State San Bernardino and Friday’s second meeting will likely have major implications in the final standings.

An Eye On the Otters: Cal State Monterey Bay comes into the weekend looking to bounce back from a pair of losses last weekend at the hands of Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona. The Otters are 12-4 overall and 9-4 in the CCAA and are currently tied with the Pioneers for second place. Rheann Fall is pacing Monterey Bay and the CCAA with 4.4 kills per game, while Melanie Lashbrook is third in the conference with a .338 hitting percentage. CSUMB picked up a 3-1 victory over Cal State East Bay in the teams’ first meeting this season on Sept. 18.

Sizing Up San Francisco State: The Gators come into the weekend with a 10-8 record overall and a 7-6 mark in conference play. SFSU is coming off a pair of losses last weekend but have won three of its last five matches. Lauren Walsh leads the Gators and is fourth in the conference in kills, averaging 3.56 per game, while setter Iris Tolenada sits atop the CCAA with a 10.49 assists per game average. San Francisco State will be looking to repeat its 3-1 victory over the Pioneers in their first meeting on Sept. 17.

Cal State East Bay Set to Play Two in SoCal: The Pioneer men’s soccer team hits the road again this weekend, heading to Southern California for a pair against Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona. Cal State East Bay (2-12-2, 1-9-2 CCAA) will be looking to avenge a loss to the Coyotes just three weeks ago and snap a six-game losing streak in its penultimate trip of the 2010 campaign.

Last Time Out: Cal State East Bay suffered two tough losses last weekend at the hands of Cal State Stanislaus and No. 14 Chico State. On Friday, the Pioneers and Warriors played to a scoreless draw through 109:59 before CSUS scored the game winner on a free kick it was given after time had seemingly expired. Sunday, the Pioneers held the Wildcats scoreless for 55 minutes after an early goal before Chico broke up the 1-1 tie with two late goals. Freshman Alexis Romo scored the Pioneers’ only goal on the weekend, his team-leading third of the year.

Looking Ahead: The Pioneers close out the CCAA season next weekend, as they face travel partner UC San Diego in a home and away split. Cal State East Bay hosts the Tritons on Oct. 29 before heading to La Jolla for the final CCAA game of the season on Oct. 31. The Pioneers then play host to Bethesda Christian for Senior Day on Nov. 2 to close out the 2010 campaign.

Observing the Coyotes: Sixth-ranked Cal State San Bernardino enters the weekend riding a three-game winning streak and brings a 10-3-1 overall record and 8-3-1 mark in conference play. The Coyotes sit in second place in the South Division and boast the CCAA points and goals leader in Obi Agwu. Cal State San Bernardino last met the Pioneers on Oct. 3, when the Coyotes came away with a 3-1 victory on the strength of a hat trick from Agwu.

Brushing Up on the Broncos: Cal Poly Pomona brings a 7-6-1 overall record and a 5-6-1 mark in the CCAA into this weekend’s set. The Broncos are coming off back-to-back shutout losses to Cal State San Bernardino last weekend. Pomona is led by Luis Gonzalez’ 20 points on seven goals and six assists. The Broncos last met Cal State East Bay just three weeks ago in Hayward, playing to a 1-1 draw through double overtime on Oct. 1.

Pioneers Look to Continue Success on the Road: The Cal State East Bay women’s soccer team hits the road to take on Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona in Southern California this weekend. The Pioneers (6-6-3, 4-6-2 CCAA) are coming off an undefeated weekend and are looking to finish out the season strong with only four matches remaining. East Bay will meet the Coyotes at 12:30 p.m. on Friday before heading to Pomona to take on the Broncos at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Last Time Out: The Pioneers picked up three points and went undefeated for the third time during the conference season, topping Cal State Stanislaus, 3-2, in overtime before holding Chico State to a 0-0 draw. East Bay saw Shianna Falk score a pair and Michelle Quintero add a goal, while Nina Cefalo posted her second shutout of the season in Sunday’s draw.

Looking Ahead: Cal State East Bay will close out the 2010 campaign next weekend, splitting the weekend with travel partner UC San Diego. The Pioneers will face the Tritons at home on Oct. 29 for Senior Day before heading to La Jolla on Oct. 31 to cap the season on the road.

Overtime Overtures: Cal State East Bay has had a knack for going to extra time this season, playing its fifth and sixth overtime matches of the 2010 campaign last weekend. The Pioneers have yet to lose in OT this year, scoring the golden goal twice and drawing four times.

Scouting San Bernardino: The Coyotes come into Friday’s match after sweeping a pair of matches against travel partner Cal Poly Pomona last weekend. San Bernardino has won three straight and brings an 8-5-1 overall mark into the weekend. The Coyotes are led by Jani Carmona’s 27 points on 11 goals and five assists. In the Pioneers’ first meeting with CSUSB this season, East Bay came away with a 3-2 victory in double overtime on Oct. 3 in Hayward.

Checking Out Cal Poly Pomona: The Broncos come into the weekend with a 6-5-3 record overall and a 4-5-3 mark in conference play. Pomona is coming off a pair of losses to Cal State San Bernardino last weekend and has won just one of their last five matches. The Broncos and Pioneers last met on Oct. 1 in Hayward, when they played to a 0-0 draw.

CCAA Preview Meet

Cal State East Bay Set for CCAA Preview Meet in Whittier: The Pioneer men’s and women’s cross country teams travel south this weekend for the CCAA Preview Meet in Whittier. Hosted by Cal Poly Pomona, this weekend’s meet will serve as a preview of the Whittier Narrows Regional Park course where the CCAA Championships will be held on Nov. 6. The 6k women’s and 8k men’s courses will feature flat trails made up of both grass and packed dirt.

Last Time Out: Both Pioneer squads had impressive showings at the Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale on Oct. 16. The women finished third overall, led by sophomore Megan McDaniel’s 20th-place showing and senior Nancy Velazquez’ 26th-place finish. On the men’s side, the Pioneers were led by Erik Rodriguez for the fifth-straight race. The sophomore finished the 8k course in 26:54.8, good for 36th in a field of over 125 runners. Both teams topped at least one conference opponent in the team results.

Looking Ahead: Cal State East Bay will take a week off to prepare for the 2010 CCAA Championships, to be held back in Whittier on Nov. 6. The Pioneers will close out the season with a road race in San Francisco on Nov. 13.

Pioneers Open Home Slate Against Mills College: Cal State East Bay kicks off the 2010-11 home campaign this weekend with the first of two meets at Pioneer Pool this season. The Pioneers will play host to Mills College for the teams’ annual meeting at noon on Saturday. CSUEB is coming off a one-week break from competition following two season-opening defeats at the hands of UC Santa Cruz and San Jose State.

Last Time Out: Cal State East Bay kicked off the 2010-11 campaign at UC Santa Cruz last weekend, falling to both the Banana Slugs and the Spartans despite several quality performances. Several newcomers posted top-three finishes, with Murphy Wimer taking the 200 free and 200 IM events and Lindsay Miller taking the 100 free in the matchup with UC Santa Cruz. The Pioneers lost to the Banana Slugs, 141.5-91.5, and to the Spartans, 182-67.

Looking Ahead: The Pioneers return to action in three weeks, as they travel to the 2010 Bay Area Invitational in Oakland on Nov. 12 and 13. East Bay will then head to Fresno to take on Fresno Pacific and Biola on Nov. 20.
