Brianna Nap and Jill Westendorf each fired off final-round 79s, a combined improvement of 14 strokes from the first round, helping George Fox to move up one spot and finish second Tuesday among a tough field at the St. Martin’s Invitational at the Olympia Country Club.
The Bruins, ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division III, trailed the University of Victoria by one stroke after Monday’s opening round and scored a 325 on Tuesday to finish at 647.
It wasn’t enough, however, to catch Western Washington, which ran away with the event after rounds of 309 and 310 to beat George Fox by 28 strokes.
The Vikings, who are ranked No. 12 in Division II, had four of the top five finishers, including co-medalists Sophie Elstrott and Katie Sharpe, each at 76-76=152.
Kelsey Morrison was the top Bruin at the event after placing fourth individually with rounds of 78 and 81 for a two-round total of 159.
“Conditions were a little more difficult (Tuesday), with damp and foggy conditions in the morning and tough pin placements,” said Bruins head coach MaryJo McCloskey. “I was really proud (of) how our well our team handled the competition, the pressure and the course. I also continue to be excited about the depth of our team, as Abby Mann, playing as an individual, fired a solid round of 80. In conference play, we play four out of six players, so our depth is going to be very important in our championship series.”
Host St. Martin’s, ranked No. 25 in Division II, placed third at (650), while Victoria, ranked No. 13 in Division II, slipped to fourth (652).
California State University-East Bay was fifth with 681, followed by Simon Fraser University at 711 and the University of Puget Sound at 721.
