All Contra Costa County library branches offer programs for children, teens, adults and families. All branches will be closed Nov. 11 for Veterans Day, Nov. 24 for a furlough day, and Nov. 25 in observance of Thanksgiving. At the Clayton Community Library, Story Time programs are free.
Picture Book Time: for children 3-5 years old who may attend without a caregiver, is from 11-11:30 a.m. Thursdays through Nov. 4.
Patty Cakes Story Time: for children up to 3 years old attending with a caregiver, is at 11 a.m. Tuesdays through Dec. 7, and features songs, rhymes and stories with an aim to early literacy.
Tarantulas Walking: 4-4:40 p.m. Oct. 21. All ages can learn about tarantulas and perhaps get close to a live one. Mike Moran from Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve will lead a discussion about tarantulas.
Thanksgiving stories and craft: 11-11:40 a.m. Nov. 18. For children ages 3-6, and advance registration is required.
Mexican Immigration: Past and Present. 2-3 p.m. Oct. 23. In the Clayton Reads program, Manuel Gonzales, a professor at CSU East Bay and DVC, and author of "Mexicanos: A History of Mexicans in the United States," takes a look at both legal and illegal immigration over the past 100 years since the Mexican Revolution.
Job Search 2010 -- Utilizing Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to Land Your Next Job: 7:15-9 p.m. Nov. 3. Participants will learn how to use social Internet sites effectively in a job search and get tips on creating an online "digital identity" so recruiters can find them. Register by noon Nov. 3.
The Tortilla Curtain book discussion: 2-4 p.m. Nov. 7, 15. In the Clayton Reads program, librarian Karen Hansen-Smith will moderate the book discussion.
Folktales From Mexico: 7-7:35 p.m. Nov. 8. Families are invited to the Clayton Reads program at which storyteller Michael Katz will offer tales from Mexico.
Computer docent: teaches basic computer and Internet skills beginning at 3 p.m. Tuesdays. Call 925-673-0659 to schedule a 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. appointment.

Baby Time: from 10-10:20 a.m. Tuesdays through Nov. 16, is for children ages 6 months to 2 years attending with a caregiver. It features short picture books, songs, bounces and finger plays.
Toddler Time: for children ages 2-3½ attending with a caregiver, is from 11-11:30 a.m. Tuesdays through Nov. 16, and features short picture books, songs, finger plays and flannel board stories.
Toddler Tumble Time: 10-11:15 a.m. Wednesdays through Oct. 27. Families with children 1 to 3½ years old can learn and play together. A six-week play group features toys, crafts, books and play. Community resource agencies will be on hand to discuss parenting questions and concerns about child development, speech, play, nutrition and fitness. In-person preregistration is required.
Preschool Time: for children ages 3½-5, is from 1:30-2 p.m. Wednesdays through Nov. 17, and features stories, songs and finger plays.
Halloween family program: 7-8 p.m. Oct. 25. Residents are invited for Halloween stories and a Halloween craft.
Day of the Dead family program: 7-8 p.m. Nov. 1. Participants will read Day of the Dead stories, and start a pinata craft
Children Learning Through Play with We Care: noon-4 p.m. Nov. 16. Families can enjoy free arts and crafts, group social play and developmental screenings for children ages 1 month to 5 years old through the Family Place partnership with We Care. Child developmental specialists will be on hand to answer questions.
Junior Explorer Safari: Anytime through Oct. 26. For ages 5-10. Participants will go on a library hunt to answer clues and win prizes.
Fire Safety Puppet Show: 2-2:45 p.m. Oct. 21. Participants will celebrate Fire Prevention Month with Corky and Minnie Mae, puppets who entertain with fire safety messages. For kids up to age 7.
Concord Mystery Book Club: 2:30 p.m. the second Sunday of the month, and mystery lovers are invited to join the group. The Nov. 14 discussion is on "Art of Detection" by Laurie King.
Total Healing: The Meditation Prescription: 7 p.m. Oct. 28. Dr. Zaslove will discuss how meditation can improve your health.
The Importance of Attitude in Your Job Search: 2-3:30 p.m. Nov. 18. Karen St. Julien leads a workshop to help job seekers eliminate negative thinking, remember intrinsic value and celebrate accomplishments, and incorporate fun to boost morale and reduce stress. Registration required.
Knitting and crochet group: 1:15-4:45 p.m. the first Sunday of each month. Knitters and crocheters of all levels are welcome. Drop in anytime between 1:15 and 4:45 to knit, crochet and network. Free knitting instruction by Melanie Mintz, and free crocheting help by Chris Curtiss. Some practice yarn provided, but bring your own needles. On Nov. 7, participants will learn how to crochet a necklace for the holidays. The project is found in the book, "Hooked On Jewelry: 40+ Designs to Crochet" by Patricia Harste.
A small claims adviser workshop: 5:30-8 p.m. the second Thursday of the month, presented by the Contra Costa County Superior Court, and led by Gloria Sanchez, an attorney and small claims adviser. No registration, but latecomers will not be admitted due to the large amount of information to be covered.
