Penalties doom Pioneers in 4-0 loss to NDNU

HAYWARD, Calif. – A pair of penalties and two red cards led the Cal State East Bay men’s soccer to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Notre Dame de Namur in nonconference action at Pioneer Stadium on Tuesday night. The Pioneers (2-8-2) gave up three second-half goals to the Argonauts (7-2), who are ranked seventh in the latest NSCAA West Region poll.
"We were pretty flat tonight," CSUEB Head Coach Andy Cumbo said. "Our young team has been experiencing some challenging situations recently. We are keeping our focus and remembering how important it is to learn from our experiences. We’ll keep moving forward."
The first half saw NDNU control possession, out-shooting the Pioneers 14-3 and opening scoring in the 28th minute on a penalty kick. After Armondo Garcia was tripped up in the box, NDNU’s Cristobal Montes converted the penalty with a low shot to beat CSUEB keeper Bryce Bookhamer on the ground to his right.
The Pioneers had their best chance to even the score in the 44th minute, as a corner kick from sophomore Michael Dowson found junior Brett Souza in the box. Souza had his shot blocked by an NDNU defender, but the rebound came back to Dowson whose shot was batted away by Argonaut keeper Isiah Castro. That rebound found freshman Kyle Ball who had his shot stopped by Castro, who held onto the ball to end the scoring threat.
Bookhamer made six saves on 14 shots in the opening 45 minutes to keep the NDNU lead at one heading into the break. Castro made two saves, while facing three shots.
The second half saw more of the same from the Argonauts, who took a 2-0 lead just eight minutes into the second frame. After Notre Dame was awarded its second penalty of the match, Cristobal stepped to the spot again and gave the Argonauts a two-goal advantage.
After Pioneer freshman Carlos Navarrete was sent off in the 59th minute, the Pioneers were forced to play down a man for the second straight match. Three minutes later, NDNU took advantage, scoring its third goal of the night on a Cole Travis strike on the ground from five yards out.
The Argonauts made it a four-goal lead with a strike from Jesus Gonzalez in the 68th minute. After Travis played a ball to Nathan Carlson in the box, Carlson fed Gonzalez, whose shot from eight yards beat Bookhamer and gave NDNU a 4-0 lead.
Less than a minute later, the Pioneers saw their second player sent off in Souza, giving the Argonauts an 11-9 advantage in pitch personnel. As a result, NDNU maintained possession through the remainder of the match, holding off Cal State East Bay’s diminished ranks.
Notre Dame finished the half with 13 shots, forcing Bookhamer to make two saves and 70th-minute replacement Patrick Gilbertson to make three in the half. The Pioneers managed just one shot in the second frame, with Castro finishing the game with two saves to earn the win and the shutout. Montes paced all players with six shots, while Sean Lynum-Young, Ball, Souza and Dowson posted a shot apiece in the loss.
Cal State East Bay returns to action on Friday, as it travels to Southern California to meet Cal State LA to open the second half of the CCAA campaign. The Pioneers and Golden Eagles will meet for the second time this season, kicking off at 4:30 p.m. at Jesse Owens Stadium.
