First-ever photo show attracts work from throughout Bay Area

Fifty-eight photographs from 48 greater Bay Area art students – seven of them from California State University, East Bay – have been selected for the CSUEB “Best of the Bay Area – A Juried Exhibition of Student Photography” Nov. 2 to Dec. 2.
The exhibition's opening reception will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2 in the in the University Art Gallery, located in the Art & Education Building on the university's Hayward Campus, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd. For the remainder of the exhibit, doors will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 6 to 9 p.m. Fridays; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays through Dec. 2. Admission is free for both the opening reception and all days of the exhibition.
In addition to work from CSUEB students Matt Araquistain, Zach Dennis, Mark Fore, Ana Gallegos, Monica Garcia, Justin Reece, Alex Shamis, there will be pieces from students of the Academy of Art University, Berkeley City College, California College of the Arts, Chabot College, City College of San Francisco, John F. Kennedy University, Mills College, Modesto College, San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco State University, San Jose State University and West Valley College.
The exhibition – a first for Cal State East Bay – was organized by Scott Hopkins, associate professor of art, and judged by Deborah Klochko, director of the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego. Klochko is a nationally recognized juror with more than 25 years of experience as a photography museum educator, director and curator.
“The exhibit will have many examples of the diversity of style and examples of the quality ideas that Bay Area students achieve in their work,” said Hopkins. “All the artwork is outstanding, I know visitors will be impressed.”
One 16-foot tall fabric piece will be hung from the ceiling. Some of the artwork is so large it must be delivered by truck; other pieces are small and intimate.
Parking on campus is $2 per hour, $10 per weekday, or $5 per weekend day.
