Pioneers return home to defeat Cal State Dominguez Hills in four sets

HAYWARD, Calif. - Following five consecutive road CCAA matches, the Pioneer women’s volleyball team returned home and came away with a four-set victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday night. The Pioneers (10-3, 5-3 CCAA) won their second straight match and maintained their perfect home record with the 25-11, 20-25, 25-23, 25-15 victory.
"It’s great to play at home following five tough road matches," CSUEB Head Coach Jim Spagle said. "We’ve had good success at home and it showed in the victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills."
East Bay opened up an 11-3 lead and never looked back in the first set. Walsh put down a kill to give the Pioneers the victory.
Cal State Dominguez Hills evened the match on a kill by Devine, topping the Pioneers 25-20 in the second game.
In a hard fought third set, the Pioneers held an 18-14 advantage. The Toros went on an 8-3 run to take a 22-21 lead. The Pioneers regained the lead, 23-22, on an Athwal kill and a Toro attack error. Neely spiked the game winner as the Pioneers took a 2-1 advantage.
In the fourth set, the Pioneers jumped out to 10-5 lead and extended their advantage to 20-11. Allen’s kill and a Toro attack error enabled the Pioneers to win the match.
As a team, the Pioneers had 46 kills and hit for a .218 percentage. Katie Allen and Jit Athwal had 11 kills each, with Allen adding three service aces. Kitona Offord had a solid match with eight kills, a .438 hitting percentage and two blocks.
Roxanne Neely came off the bench to record seven kills, 10 assists, and five digs. K.C. Walsh contributed to the Pioneer victory with 29 assists and 15 digs. Defensive specialists Lauren Massa and Katie Glomb anchored the back row with 23 and 14 digs, respectively.
"I felt that Roxy Neely came off the bench and gave us a big lift in the third set," Spagle said. "Katie Glomb also came off the bench to play well in the back row."
The Toros were led by Denise Devine who recorded a match-high 20 kills. Libero Hilary Hougardy had 28 digs.
Cal State East Bay returns to action tomorrow for the second match of their four-match homestand, taking on No. 23 Cal State LA. The Pioneers and Golden Eagles are set to meet at 7 p.m. at Pioneer Gym.
