Pioneers win five-set thriller over Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - In a hotly contested match featuring two teams combining for 124 kills and 159 digs defensively, the Pioneer women’s volleyball team defeated Sonoma State in five sets (24-26, 25-20, 21-25, 25-19, 15-11) on Oct. 16.
The victory moves Cal State East Bay in a second-place tie with Cal State Monterey Bay in the CCAA with a 9-4 record. The Pioneers are 14-4 overall. Sonoma State stands at 7-5 in the CCAA and 10-6 overall.
The Pioneers had 63 kills led by Katie Allen with 18 and Jit Athwal with 15. East Bay recorded a season-high 26 blocks anchored by Brianna Bryant with 11.
K.C. Walsh contributed to the Pioneer victory with seven kills, 29 assists, and 13 digs. Lauren Massa had 23 kills.
"Following Friday’s tough matches for both teams, I knew the match would be a real grind," CSUEB Head Coach Jim Spagle said. "Winning two road matches at Humboldt and Sonoma State is a real accomplishment."
Allyson Sather recorded 18 kills for the Seawolves. Keala Peterson had 16 kills and completed a double-double with 12 digs.
Neither team trailed by more than three points in the first set. Roxanne Neely put down a kill to give the Pioneers a 22-19 lead. Allen’s kill maintained a Pioneers 23-21 advantage. Sonoma State tied the set 23-23. The Pioneers took a 24-23 lead only to see the Seawolves score the next three points to win the set.
The Pioneers trailed the second set 13-10. East Bay took an 18-17 advantage on a Kitona Offord kill. Athwal’s service ace and four Sonoma State errors enabled the Pioneers to tie the match.
The Seawolves took a 10-9 lead on a Peterson kill and never trailed the remainder of the third set to take a 2-1 advantage.
East Bay had 16 kills while hitting a sizzling .424 percentage to take the fourth set and tie the match 2-2. The Pioneers opened up a 16-7 lead and took the set on an Allen kill.
The decisive fifth set saw the Pioneers take a 10-7 lead on a Walsh service ace. A Bryant kill enabled the Pioneers increased their lead to 12-7. Consecutive kills by Athwal and Allen maintained a 14-10 advantage. Allen’s 18th kill enabled the Pioneers to win the five set match.
"We had players come off the bench and give us a real lift," Spagle said. "Amanda Limeberger came in and energized the team. She played solid defense and had good sets. Kara Crowder came off the bench and did a good job. Our middles Brianna Bryant and Kitona Offord played well. Katie Allen had an outstanding match while Lauren Massa made some great digs. Jit Athwal also played solid on defense."
The Pioneers will play their next five matches at home beginning with Cal State Monterey Bay on Oct. 22.
