LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team fell to No. 9 UC San Diego, 2-0, in its final game of the 2010 campaign on Sunday in La Jolla. The Pioneers finish the season with a 6-10-3 overall record and a 4-10-2 mark in CCAA play after falling to the Tritons for the second time in three days.
Sarah McTigue accounted for all of the offense for UCSD, notching a pair of goals in the first seven minutes to give the Tritons the only lead they would need. McTigue's first goal came unassisted, just three minutes into the game, when she took a shot from the top of the box that hit off the inside of the crossbar and into the net to give UCSD the 1-0 lead.
McTigue struck again in the seventh minute, this time getting help from Jessica Wi. After Wi played a square ball into the box, McTigue one-timed her shot inside the left post to beat Pioneer keeper Nina Cefalo and put UC San Diego up 2-0 with 83 minutes to play.
Though the Tritons picked up the win, they only held an 11-8 advantage in shots, putting only four shots on target. The Pioneers worked to come back from the early goals, with Michelle Garcia leading the way with three strikes. Cefalo made two saves in the loss, while UCSD keeper Kristin Armstrong needed a pair of stops to pick up her second straight shutout and victory over the Pioneers.
Cal State East Bay will lose five seniors in Garcia, Athena Bell, Giana Raccanello, Jasmine Stephens and Jennifer Lu. Sophomore Shianna Falk finished the season as the Pioneers' scoring leader, posting 11 points on five goals and one assist, while Garcia and junior Michelle Quintero each posted eight points on the year, with Garcia leading the team with four assists. In its second season since the return to Division II competition, Cal State East Bay capped the year with double its win total from the 2009 campaign.
