Pioneers Set to Open Regular Season at Lynda Goodrich Classic: The Cal State East Bay women’s basketball team hits the road to open the 2010-11 regular season in Bellingham, Wash., this weekend. The Pioneers begin a seven-game road swing with No. 24 Western Washington and St. Martin’s at the Lynda Goodrich Classic, hosted by the Vikings. East Bay is coming off a pair of exhibition losses to start the season and will look to shake off the dust after a 10-day break from competition following their last preseason game at Holy Names. The tournament will also mark the regular season debuts for Head Coach Suzy Barcomb and Associate Head Coach and former Pioneer Holli Howard-Carpenter.
Last Time Out: The Cal State East Bay women’s basketball team dropped a 65-59 decision to Holy Names in its final exhibition game of the 2010-11 season. The Pioneers trailed by 10 at the half, 39-29, but made a big push in the second half, closing the gap to just six points in the end. Cassie Coble was key in the comeback effort, helping East Bay out-rebound the Hawks, 50-35, post 11 steals and hold Holy Names to 13 fewer points in the second half.
Looking Ahead: The Pioneers return to action on Dec. 3 for the Battle of the Bay and CCAA opener at San Francisco State before heading to Cal State Monterey Bay on Dec. 4 in the first week of conference play. East Bay will then head to Arcata for the CCAA/Pac West Challenge on Dec. 11-12, where it will face Dominican and Academy of Art.
Watching Western Washington: Cal State East Bay will open the 2010-11 campaign against the 24th-ranked Vikings on Friday night. Western Washington enters the weekend undefeated at 2-0 after capturing the GNAC/CCAA Crossover Challenge title in Seattle last week. The Vikings topped then-No. 11 UC San Diego before downing San Francisco State. The Vikings held SFSU to just 24 points, a single-game low by a GNAC school, while the win marked Head Coach Carmen Dolfo’s 400th of her career. Two seniors, center Lauren Hefflin and guard Amanda Dunbar, collected All-Tournament Team honors and lead the Vikings so far. Hefflin was also named GNAC Player of the Week after averaging 12.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in the two games while shooting 12-for-18 from the field. Dunbar was hot from three-point range, scoring 22 points in two games and going 6-for-9 from beyond the arc. Western is 21-3 all-time in 13 years at the Goodrich Classic, winning or tying for 11 tournament titles.
Scouting the Saints: St. Martin’s comes into this weekend’s tournament with a 2-2 record following a pair of losses last weekend at the Western Oregon/Phoenix Inn DII Shootout. The Saints fell to Humboldt State and Dixie State last week after opening the year with a pair of wins over Hawai’i Hilo. SMU is led by senior forward Dara Zack and senior center Katie Hawkins. Zack, a 2010 second-team All-GNAC selection, is averaging 19.3 points per game, while Hawkins checks in with 10.3 points per contest. Meanwhile, senior forward Kellie Snyder is pacing the Saints on the boards with 6.7 rebounds per game. St. Martin’s takes on Montana State Northern on Friday night.
What’s In Store: The Pioneers return reigning CCAA Freshman of the Year Lauren Lucchesi, along with the conference’s sixth-leading scorer from 2009-10 in guard Claudia Nelson. East Bay also welcomes back five other returners while adding four freshman, including McDonald’s All-America nominee Sarah Finlay out of Reno High School.
2009-10 Rewind: Cal State East Bay finished its first season in the CCAA with just two wins but saw Lauren Lucchesi collect CCAA Freshman of the Year honors and Claudia Nelson lead the league in steals. The Pioneers notched their first win over a CCAA opponent in overtime over Cal State LA before picking up an upset win over eventual CCAA Tournament Champion Humboldt State in the last week of the season. Nelson capped the season with CCAA Player of the Week honors.
Experience on the Sidelines: The Pioneers are just underway in their first season under new Head Coach Suzy Barcomb, who joins the Pioneers after 12 successful seasons at University of Puget Sound. Barcomb is the reigning WBCA Division III West Region Coach of the Year and brings experience transitioning to a more competitive level to the team after helping the Loggers move from NAIA to DIII.
Back On the Hill: Associate Head Coach Holli Howard-Carpenter, a former Pioneer guard and assistant coach at Chico State, joins Barcomb on the sidelines this season. During her tenure at Chico State, Howard-Carpenter helped guide the Wildcats to four CCAA Tournament appearances and three NCAA Tournament berths, including two trips to the Division II Sweet 16. In her second season on the sideline, Chico State captured both the CCAA Tournament and regular season titles. With three years experience in the CCAA with the Wildcats, Howard-Carpenter is set to help build a program that will be among the best in the conference in the coming years.
