Rec and Wellness Center readies for winter quarter grand opening
CSUEB's new Recreation & Wellness Center officially opens its doors Jan. 11, 2011. To prepare for a smooth launch, ASI Recreation will hold a "trial period" Dec. 6-23 to test out equipment and services.
As part of the dry run, students, faculty, staff, alumni, retirees and emeriti faculty can register for free trial memberships. The sign up period will be Nov. 29-Dec. 3, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m; a Bay Card ID is required.
After the grand opening, all current students will have full access to the facility, which was funded by Associated Students Inc. and student fees. Faculty, staff and alumni will be able to purchase memberships at special rates.
The 56,000 square-foot building is located across from Pioneer Heights student housing on the site of the former Student Services hub. The state-of-the-art fitness center will also boast massage rooms, indoor track, a two court gymnasium, activity rooms, an outdoor field and a juice bar.

Online master's degree in health care administration
Cal State East Bay's College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences received a grant to establish the first fully online master's of science degree program in health care administration in the 23-campus California State University system.
The $50,000 grant, from the California State University Commission on the Extended University, will be matched by funding from CSUEB's Division of Continuing and International Education.
The proposed master's project would address the state's workforce needs, increase student access to education, sustain the university's excellence through innovation, provide extended learning opportunities to health care professionals, and support international educational experiences, according to Toni Fogarty, associate professor and chair of the Department of Public Affairs and Administration.
"This program will address the strong industry and societal need for well-prepared health care managers and administrators," said Fogarty.

Hayward Hills Swap Meet makes its home at CSUEB
The Hayward Hills Swap Meet debuted in September at Cal State East Bay, bringing fruit, veggies and fun to the often-quiet weekend on campus. The open air market runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays year-round in parking lot H on the northeast side of the Hayward campus. Admission is free; short-term parking is available.
"We've heard [President] Mo talk about the vibrant university village," said Chris Brown, associate vice president and executive director for Enterprise Operations and Foundation. "No. 1, it's to bring life to the campus community on the weekends — we have 1,200 residents — and it's to provide another community connection and to be a good neighbor."
Up to 200 vendors offer new and used gift items from T-shirts to jewelry, fresh produce and fair-style foods, such as kettle corn and hot dogs.
