Free fitness center membership in December

  • November 30, 2010

Take a spin class, throw some hoops or go for a leisurely jog in the recently completed 54,000-square-foot Recreation and Wellness Center on the Hayward campus at no cost during a trial opening in December. Trial membership is open to members of the CSUEB community, including faculty, employees, retirees and alumni. Enrolled students are eligible for free membership on a quarterly basis.

“You’ll get to be the first users of the facility,” said Krista Smith, director of R.A.W, about those who register for the trial opening. “It’s a great opportunity to use the facility in a little less impacted environment.”

Register with your Bay Card from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Dec. 3 at the front desk of the center – known as R.A.W. by members of Associated Students Inc. – to workout for free Dec. 6 through 23. Pick up a free T-shirt during registration while supplies last. R.A.W. stands near the intersection of South Loop and Harder roads, across the street from the Pioneer Heights student apartments.

When doors open at 6 a.m. Monday, Dec. 6, those who signed up in advance will be free to use the center’s state-of-the-art fitness equipment, play pickup basketball in the gymnasium and attend a volleyball or badminton session.

On Dec. 8, the center will hold a daylong fitness class premier day featuring 30-minute classes focusing on spinning, kick boxing, cardio sculpting and abs and glutes. Or try out Zumba – Latin cardio dance – or Bosu – cardio and balance training using a dome-shaped workout ball.

The grand opening of R.A.W. is scheduled for Jan. 11. Currently enrolled students qualify for a complimentary membership each quarter. An introductory membership rate of $65 will be available for winter quarter for faculty, staff, retirees and alumni; the regular rate of $85 per quarter will go into effect in the spring.

“We realize it’s always a challenge for people to commit the money and energy” to a gym membership, Smith said.

Offering a trial opening not only gives prospective members a sneak peek at the center, its services and value but also gives staff members a chance to fine tune operations, Smith said.

“It’s an opportunity for us to work out the kinks,” she said. “If you like being a problem solver and helper, it’s a great way to give us feedback. As always, we’ll be ready with open ears and open arms.”
