Pioneers find success at Bay Area Invitational
- November 13, 2010
OAKLAND, Calif. - The Pioneer women’s swimming team performed well at the Bay Area Invitational hosted by Mills College on Nov. 12-13.
"I was very pleased with our efforts this weekend; the team continues to improve from week to week, even though our training levels are very intense right now," CSUEB Head Coach Ben Loorz said. "Our 1650 performances in particular showed us that our conditioning is in a very good place."
Sara Bonino was a workhorse for the Pioneers, winning the 1650 yard freestyle in a best-ever in-season time of 18:34.23. Bonino was third in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:29.40 on Nov. 13 and had a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 200 butterfly (2:27.24) and 200 freestyle (2:03.59).
Jenni Perez (3rd) and Becca Stratto (4th) also finished in the top five in the 1650, both with lifetime best efforts.
The Pioneers received of a pair of runner-up finishes from Bethany Hoopman in the 50-yard backstroke (30.06) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.95), while Rachel Knowles notched a second-place effort in the 200 IM (2:20.32).
Lindsay Miller placed fifth in the 100 free (57.81) and finished sixth in the 50 yard butterfly (29.43).
The foursome of Hoopman, Perez, Knowles and Heidi Reddig captured the 200 free relay with a time of 1:51.19.
"This type of meet - with back-to-back Friday-Saturday sessions - is very important for us as we prepare for the grueling championship format meets later in the season," Loorz said. "You have to be able to sustain intense efforts in a multiple day meet, and the team took an excellent first step in preparing for that this weekend."
The Pioneers return to action next Saturday, Nov. 20, when they travel to Fresno to take on Fresno Pacific and Biola.
