Pioneers drop three-set match at Cal State LA

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – For only the second time this season, the Pioneer volleyball team dropped a three-set match losing to Cal State LA, 25-21, 25-12, 25-12, on Nov. 5. The Pioneers (18-6, 13-6 CCAA) hit a season-low .044 on the night and settle for a split with the Golden Eagles (14-9, 11-8) after defeating them earlier in the season.

As a team, Cal State LA connected at a .356 clip, led by Marquis Mora's 10 kills and impressive .625 hitting percentage. Zuzana Cizova followed with nine kills.

Brianna Bryant had eight kills while Roxanne Neely recorded six kills, seven assists and nine digs for the Pioneers.

In the first set, the Pioneers led 18-14. The Golden Eagles recorded three straight kills to cut the deficit to 18-17. Cal State LA went on a 7-3 and won the set on Cizova’s kill.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 15-8 advantage and extended their lead to 21-9 on a kill by Mary Laupepa in the second set. A Pioneer attack error enabled Cal State LA to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Cal State LA led 11-8 and never looked back from that point in the third set. Jit Athwal put down a kill as the Pioneers trailed 22-13. Mora’s 10th kill of the match gave the Golden Eagles a 24-14 advantage. An attack error by the Pioneers sealed the three-set victory for Cal State LA.

The Pioneers will play at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Torodome in Carson.
