No. 6 Cal State San Bernardino avenges earlier loss with sweep of Pioneers

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Despite topping Cal State San Bernardino earlier this season, the Cal State East Bay volleyball team could not earn the season sweep, falling to the sixth-ranked Coyotes in three sets, 25-15, 25-14, 25-18 on Friday night. For the Pioneers (19-7, 14-7 CCAA) the loss was just their third in three sets this season and their second in the last three matches.
The Coyotes, hitting at a .308 clip for the season, ended the match with a sizzling .457 percentage. Nicole Moore led the way with 14 kills while hitting for a .545 percentage in the win. Samantha Middleborn and Jane Chafeh each added nine kills.
Katie Allen had a good match for the Pioneers with eight kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Roxanne Neely and Brianna Bryant followed with seven putaways each.
The Coyotes hit for a .407 percentage in taking the first set. Cal State San Bernardino jumped out to a 16-11 lead. Back-to-back kills by East Bay’s Katie Allen cut the Coyotes advantage to 16-13. Cal State San Bernardino went on a 7-2 run and scored the last two points to take the set. Megan Johnson and Nicole Moore led the way with four kills each. Allen had four offensive attacks for the Pioneers.
With the score tied 8-8, the Coyotes outscored the Pioneers 15-6 to take a commanding 23-14 lead in the second set. A kill by Samantha Middleborn enabled the Coyotes to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Cal State San Bernardino maintained its torrid hitting attack with a .479 percentage after the first two sets.
The third set saw the Coyotes take a 20-14 lead. East Bay cut the deficit to 21-17 on consecutive kills by Jit Athwal and Brianna Bryant. Three straight Pioneer attack errors and Chafeh’s nine kill of the match secured the victory for the Coyotes.
Cal State East Bay will conclude the 2010 season on Saturday with a road match at Cal Poly Pomona. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
