Pioneers fall in final tune-up at Holy Names

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay women’s basketball team dropped a 65-59 exhibition decision to Holy Names on Wednesday night. The Pioneers were playing their final preseason game of the season ahead of their season opener on Nov. 26 at Western Washington.

"We dug ourselves in too big of a hole to start off the game and although we made a run in the second half, our turnovers once again impacted the outcome of the game," CSUEB Head Coach Suzy Barcomb said. "We lacked composure. We continue to struggle to have an inside game. Free throws, turnovers and fouls are our Achilles heel."

The Pioneers trailed by 10 at the half, 39-29, but made a big push in the second half, closing the gap to just six points in the end. Cassie Coble was key in the comeback effort, helping East Bay out-rebound the Hawks, 50-35, post 11 steals and hold Holy Names to 13 fewer points in the second half.

"Cassie Coble had a great all around game for us tonight," Barcomb said.

Cal State East Bay could not, however, keep control of the ball, committing 34 turnovers and 23 personal fouls, sending Holy Names to the line 27 times to account for 15 points from the charity stripe for the Hawks.

Three HNU players reached double figures in scoring, led by Jaime-Leigh Ronolo and Antonette Capili's 14 points apiece. Capili made all four of her shots from beyond the arc, while Lesley Vodicska added 11 points and paced the Hawks with six boards.

The Pioneers shot 38.6 percent from the floor, but struggled from the free-throw line, going 13-for-24 on foul shots, and could not connect from outside, making just two threes, compared to 10 for the Hawks.

Cal State East Bay will take a three-week break from competition to prepare for its 2010-11 regular season opener at the Lynda Goodrich Classic in Bellingham, Wash., Nov. 26 and 27. The Pioneers will meet Western Washington to kick off the campaign, followed by a matchup with St. Martin’s on Nov. 27.
