Cal State East Bay falls in exhibition opener at Pacific
- November 7, 2010
STOCKTON, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team dropped its exhibition opener at Pacific, 67-44, on Sunday afternoon at the Spanos Center in Stockton. The Pioneers nearly matched the Tigers on the boards and shot 35.6 percent in their first game under new Head Coach Suzy Barcomb.
"We played a great first half," Barcomb said. "Our lack of size prevented us from controlling the paint. We had some very positive possessions."
Senior guard Claudia Nelson led the Pioneers with 21 points in 38 minutes, while senior Amaris Sanders added five points and four boards and freshman Marlene MacMillan led East Bay with six rebounds. Pacific had four players hit double-digits in scoring, including Danielle Peacon, who notched an 18-point, 12-rebound double-double, and Kendall Rodriguez, who posted 12 points and five boards.
The first half saw the Tigers jump out to an early lead, holding East Bay scoreless for nearly five minutes and gaining a 10-2 advantage before a steal by sophomore forward Lauren Lucchesi led to a three from senior point guard Claudia Nelson to close the lead to just five. Pacific’s largest lead in the first frame was only 10 points with just over five minutes remaining, as the Pioneers matched the Tigers after snapping out of their early scoring slump.
Both teams struggled to hit from long range in the first half, as the Pioneers went 2-for-9 and the Tigers missed all nine of their attempts from beyond the arc. East Bay shot just 28.6 percent from the field, but picked up the offense to end the half, going on a 5-2 run to close the Pacific lead to just seven, 27-20, at the break.
The Tigers took control of momentum to open the second half, going on a 22-8 run over the first nine minutes to gain a 21-point lead, 49-28. Pacific took advantage of the Pioneers’ seven early turnovers and hit three of its first four three-pointers of the second half to runaway with the lead.
Though Pacific led by 30 late, the Pioneers responded with quality defense to end the game. East Bay held the Tigers scoreless over the final four minutes of play, forcing four turnovers and snagging three defensive rebounds during that span. Pacific held on, however, getting help from the Pioneer' struggles at the free throw line to pick up the 23-point win.
Neither team made the most of its chances at the charity stripe, with the Pioneers shooting just 50 percent, including a 1-for-8 performance in the final four minutes, and the Tigers going 10-for-17 from the line. Pacific dominated down low, scoring 40 points in the paint, and controlled the game defensively with 16 steals, four blocks and 35 points off 35 turnovers for East Bay. The Pioneers matched the Tigers on the boards, though, finishing just four rebounds off Pacific's pace of 38.
"We turned the ball over too many times in the second half and Pacific capitalized on our mistakes," Barcomb said. "We will continue to build upon our positives and work to improve upon our shortcomings."
Cal State East Bay will take on Holy Names in exhibition action on Nov. 10 in Oakland at 7:30 p.m. in its final tune-up before the regular season begins. The Pioneers open the 2010-11 campaign on Nov. 26 against host Western Washington at the Lynda Goodrich Classic in Bellingham, Wash.
