BELLINGHAM, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team opened the 2010-11 campaign on Friday night, falling to No. 24 Western Washington, 68-39, in its first game at the Lynda Goodrich Classic in Bellingham, Wash. The Pioneers (0-1) struggled from three-point range and the free-throw line, but shot 36 percent from the field in their regular season debut under new head coach Suzy Barcomb.

"Western Washington's depth took a toll on us," Barcomb said. "They have too many offensive options for us to defend. Our slow was a combination of first-game nerves and missing open shots and it put us in a big hole."

Sophomore forward Lauren Lucchesi and senior guard Claudia Nelson paced the Pioneers in the losing effort, both reaching double figures. Lucchesi led East Bay with 11 points, while Nelson added 10 points and Marlene MacMillan and Cassie Coble each pulled down six boards. Freshman guard Sarah Finlay dished out four assists in her debut in the red and black.

Three Viking players hit double figures in scoring, led by Amanda Dunbar and Megan Pinske's 11points apiece. Corrin Waltrip added 10 for Western Washington, going 4-for-9 from the field with two three pointers. Lauren Hefflin paced the Vikings on the boards, posting 10 rebounds and helping Western out-rebound the Pioneers 47-30.

Western Washington got out to a fast start in the first half, opening up an early 27-6 lead through 13 minutes of play. The Pioneers went just 3-for-12 from the field during that span, while Hefflin posted five points, five boards and a steal to open the game and Britt Harris scored six of the Vikings' last nine points of the early run.

East Bay snapped out of the early slump, putting together a 9-4 run that pulled it within 15. The Pioneers were sparked by a free throw and a three from Coble and finished the half with a six-minute stretch that saw them go 4-for-6 from the floor and forced four Viking turnovers to finish the first frame trailing 39-20.

"We made a great run at Western at the end of the first half with a solid defensive effort," Barcomb said.

The second half spelled more of the same for Western Washington, outscoring the Pioneers 29-19 and scoring 10 points off 14 East Bay turnovers. The Pioneers responded to the challenge, shooting nearly 40 percent from the floor and matching the Vikings on the boards. East Bay continued to struggle from beyond the arc and made just three trips to the free-throw line, hitting only one shot from the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes.

Cal State East Bay finished the game just 1-of-10 from three-point range and hit just 54.5 percent of its free throws. On the other end, the Vikings held the advantage in points off turnovers (28-6) and points in the paint (32-18), notching 11 steals and four blocks in the victory.

The Pioneers return to action tomorrow night, looking to finish out the tournament with a victory when they face St. Martin's at 5 p.m. at Carver Gym in Bellingham. The Saints picked up a 71-47 victory over Montana State Northern on Friday night.
