School chief finalists named in Wayland

A screening committee last night identified the top three candidates to replace school Superintendent Gary Burton, who is retiring at the end of the academic year.

They are: Jonathan Landman, assistant superintendent in Randolph; Paul Stein, deputy superintendent in Newton; and Anne Wilson, assistant superintendent in Brookline.

The School Committee hopes to make a selection by Feb. 7.

Foster Wright, chairman of the 12-member committee appointed to screen applicants, announced the selection at last night's School Committee meeting.

Landman received a doctorate degree from Harvard University, a master's in teaching from Tufts University and a bachelor's in political science from Brandeis University.

He has participated in the University Study in China program sponsored through Duke University. Prior to assuming his current position, Landman served as principal of Belmont High School and assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and community education for the Acton-Boxborough school district.

Stein earned his doctorate in education from Boston University, a master's in special education from Lesley University and a bachelor's degree in math and science from Cornell University.

He has been the assistant superintendent, principal and director of an alternative high school as well as a school counselor and teacher of math and science.

Wilson received a doctorate from Boston College; a master's in education with a specialization in curriculum from California State Universit, East Bay, Hayward and a bachelor's in secondary education/mathematics from Bloomberg University.

Prior to her current position, she was the founding principal and assistant principal of middle schools in California. She entered the profession as a math teacher and served as chairman of a math department.
