Pioneers snap four-game losing streak with victory over Notre Dame de Namur

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Pioneer men's basketball team snapped a four-game losing by defeating visiting Notre Dame de Namur, 77-66, in a non-conference game on Dec. 11.

With the victory, the Pioneers improve to 2-4 overall. Notre Dame de Namur stands at 1-6.

"We had a good week of practice," CSUEB Head Coach Will Biggs said. "Today, we changed things offensively and were able to get scrappy points in the win."

The Pioneers had five players score in double figures. Leading scorer Mark Samuels led the way with 19 points. Will Freedman followed with 18 points on 9 of 15 from the field. George Toyama came off the bench to score 11 points while Donavon Jackson followed with 10. Jared Waters grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Pioneers on the boards.

Notre Dame's Arron Mollet led all scorers with 22 points. Victor Lee came off the bench to tally 20 points on 8 of 13 from the field.

East Bay put it all together in the first half building a commanding 41-16 lead at intermission. The Pioneers jumped out to a 15-0 lead and led by as many as 27 points in the first half. Samuels and Toyama led the way with 11 and nine points respectively. The Pioneers shot 51.6 from the field compared to 26.3 percent for the Argonauts.   

"A lot of good things happened in the first half," Biggs said. "We executed well on offense creating many hustle points."

In the second half, the Pioneers maintained a 56-34 advantage at the 12:05 mark. Notre Dame de Namur cut East Bay's lead to 72-62 with 1:24 left on Joshua Malloy's jumper.

A pair of free throws by Roshun Wynne with 50 seconds left secured the win for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers resume CCAA play with a road game at U.C. San Diego on Dec. 14.
