Pioneers fall to UC San Diego, 69-55

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team remained winless in CCAA play following a 69-55 defeat to UC San Diego on Dec. 14. The Pioneers (2-5, 0-3 CCAA) had two players hit double figures in scoring but could not overcome a hot-shooting Triton (6-3, 1-2) squad that knocked down nearly half its shots from the floor.
Mark Samuels, the Pioneers' leading scorer this season, had another solid game putting up a game-high 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. Roshun Wynne followed with 15 points, while Brandon Hrboka scored seven points off the bench.
UC San Diego was led in scoring by Christian Hatch with 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field. Casey Ryan had 14 points and completed a double-double with 14 rebounds, while Tyler McGrath converted three three-pointers and finished with 11 points.
East Bay took a 13-12 lead on a Wynne three-pointer at the 13:40 mark of the first half. A pair of McGrath threes gave the Tritons a 29-22 advantage with 3:22 left. Freshman Rodrigue Maza, playing his first game of the season, converted a three-pointer with 1:33 remaining to narrow the Tritons lead to 29-27. UC San Diego went on a 5-3 run to hold a 34-30 advantage at intermission.
The Tritons jumped out to a 45-34 advantage with 14:15 remaining in the second half. UC San Diego led by as many as 15 points late in the game.
The Pioneers return home on Dec. 19 to take on Sonoma State. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
