Pioneers fall to Dominican in CCAA/Pac West Challenge opener
- December 11, 2010
ARCATA, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team opened the CCAA/Pac West Challenge with a loss to Dominican, 53-46, on Saturday night in Arcata. The Pioneers (0-5) struggled in the first half, but closed a 13-point halftime deficit to trail by as few as two in the second frame.
"As in every game, we made a run but it was too little too late and we didn't get important stops or rebounds late in the game," CSUEB Head Coach Suzy Barcomb said. "We wasted too many opportunities at the free-throw line. We also lost their shooter too many times which cost us."
After opening the game with the first bucket, the Pioneers went on an eight-minute scoreless streak that saw Dominican build a 12-2 lead before a Claudia Nelson free throw snapped the streak with 11:11 remaining in the half. A Maria Dinesen three cut the Penguin lead to 12-7 before DU went on an 11-6 run to close out the half with a 26-13 lead.
Neither team was impressive from the field in the first half, with East Bay shooting just 11.5 percent and Dominican going 6-for-23 from the floor. Meanwhile, the Pioneers missed eight of their 14 free throw attempts, but turned the ball over just seven times while forcing 14 Penguin turnovers. Dominican controlled the boards, however, holding a 31-13 rebounding advantage in the first half.
The second half was a different story for Cal State East Bay, which opened the second frame with a 10-3 run that closed the Dominican advantage to just four, 29-25, with 15 minutes remaining. The Pioneer run was sparked by a steal by Lauren Lucchesi that led to a jumper from Dinesen and saw Marlene MacMillan score five points and add three offensive boards and a steal.
After the Penguins reopened a seven-point advantage with a three, both teams went three minutes without scoring, a drought that was snapped by a layup from Brianna Terrance that closed the DU lead back to five, 32-27, with 11:59 to play. The Pioneers closed the Dominican lead to three points or fewer three times over the next five minutes, but could never get closer than two point.
Leading 39-36 with 7:38 remaining, the Penguins went on a 14-4 run to open up a 13-point lead with 3:35 remaining. Though the Pioneers answered with six straight points to finish the game, it was not enough to close the gap.
Nelson paced the Pioneers with 13 points, while Dinesen and Azizi Dotson added eight apiece. MacMillan led East Bay's rebounding efforts again, pulling down nine boards. East Bay bounced back to shoot 42.9 percent in the second frame, while holding the Penguins to 9-of-25 shooting from the floor and forcing another eight DU turnovers. The Pioneers struggled from the free-throw line, shooting less than 50 percent and missing out on 15 points from the charity stripe. Three Dominican players reached double figures in scoring, led by Kelsey Janusch's 23 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range.
The Pioneers return to action tomorrow afternoon when they close out the CCAA/Pac West Challenge against Academy of Art at 1 p.m. at Lumberjack Arena in Arcata.
