Arts events add sparkle to winter quarter

Two free arts offerings – a jazz masterclass and the annual Bachelor of Fine Arts exhibition lead off a season of arts programs at Cal State East Bay that also includes the musical, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” an exhibition celebrating collections at the C.E. Smith Museum of Anthropology, and the 12th annual Night of Jazz music fundraiser at Yoshi’s in Oakland.
Most programs will be held on the Hayward campus at 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd.
Saxophonist Mary Fettig opens the new First Tuesdays Jazz masterclasses with a presentation at 7 p.m. Jan. 4 in Music Building, room 1055. Six days later the annual Bachelor of Fine Art Student Exhibition opens with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. in the University Art Gallery in the Art and Education Building. The exhibition runs Jan. 11 through Feb. 12. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday, 6 to 9 p.m.; and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is always free.

- “Doublespeak: Classical Guitar Project” from San Francisco Conservatory of Music will perform Friday, Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. in MB1055. Admission is free.
- 24th Annual Invitational Band Festival Concert, Wesley J. Broadnax, director, Feb. 5, 3 p.m. in the University Theatre. Admission is free.
- Jazz Improv Ensemble Performances, Johannes Wallmann and Dann Zinn, directors, Feb. 8 and 10, at noon in MB 1039. Admission is free.
- Jazz Orchestra, Oratorio Society and Jazz Singers with Quartet San Francisco performing Duke Ellington’s “Sacred Concert.” Johannes Wallmann and Buddy James, directors, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre. Admission is $7 general, $5 youth, senior, alumni; free with CSUEB ID.
- Chamber Choir Invitational, Buddy James, director, Feb. 16 at 10 am-1 p.m. in MB 1055. Admission is free.
- CSUEB Symphony Orchestra Concert featuring the music of CSUEB alumnus and composer Nick Vasallo, Wesley J. Broadnax, conductor, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in MB 1055. Admission: $7 general, $5 youth, senior, alumni, and free with CSUEB ID.
- Chamber Winds Recital, Wesley J. Broadnax, conductor, March 1, at noon in MB 1055. Admission is free.
- First Tuesdays Jazz Masterclasses featuring vibraphonist Christian Tamburr March 1 at 7 p.m. in MB 1055. Admission is free.
- Annual Art Faculty and Staff Exhibition Reception March 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the University Art Gallery, AE building. Exhibition will be open March 2 through April 2. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday, 6 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
- C.E. Smith Museum of Anthropology presents “Stamps and Lamps, Toys and Tins: The Things We Collect and Why We Collect Them” (Main Gallery), and “Trails to Rails: Building the Transcontinental Railroad” (East Gallery) in Meiklejohn Hall, room 4047. The opening reception will be held March 4 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Exhibition will be open Monday through Friday, March 7 through June 3, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., except for closures March 21 through 25, March 31 and May 30. Admission is free.
- “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” music by Stephen Sondheim, book by Larry Gelbart, direction by Marc Jacobs, and musical direction by Marianna Wolff, will be performed March 4, 5, 11, 12 at 8 p.m. and March 13 at 2 p.m. in the University Theatre. Admission: $20 general; $15 youth, senior, alumni, and $10 with CSUEB student ID
- The East Bay Singers, with the West Valley College Chamber Singers and the Irvington High School Honors Chorale, Buddy James, conductor, performs March 5 at 8 p.m. at Old Mission San Jose, 43300 Mission Blvd., Fremont. Admission is $7 general; $5 youth, senior, alumni; and free with CSUEB ID.
- Percussion Ensemble Recital, Arthur Storch, director, will be March 8 at noon in the University Theatre. Admission is free.
- CSUEB Wind Symphony and Mt. Eden High School Wind Ensemble, Wesley J. Broadnax and Kevin Cato, conductors, featuring Joseph Schwantner’s “Concerto for Percussion,” with Brian Fronzaglia, percussion, performs March 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre. Admission: $7 general; $5 youth, senior, alumni; and free with CSUEB ID.
- Twelfth Annual Night of Jazz Music Department Scholarship Fundraiser, featuring Dave Eshelman, composer and trombonist, with the CSUEB Jazz Ensembles, Johannes Wallmann, director, performs March 14 at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. at Yoshi’s in Oakland, Jack London Square. Advance tickets are $25 (8 p.m. show) and $15 (10 p.m. show); tickets available at yoshis.com starting Jan. 1.
