Homecoming week packed with activity, Pioneer pride

Cal State East Bay is set to celebrate Homecoming 2011 with a week of events and contests centered around the theme "The Red and Black Attack" Jan. 31 through Feb.6. The week of celebration, capped by the "Battle of the Bay" basketball doubleheader against San Francisco State, also will feature Pioneer athletic events, a Homecoming parade, lunchtime contests, a pep rally and pre-game tailgate aimed at bringing the campus community together.
CSUEB students will again have the chance to win some great prizes for attending as many Homecoming Week activities and events as they can. The Red and Black Attack Passport will be available in the Pioneer Newspaper as well as at all the Homecoming events. For every event that students attend, they will receive a stamp on their passport, with each stamp corresponding to a prize. Students attending nearly every event will have the chance to win a grand prize through a drawing.
The week will kick off Monday, Jan. 31, with The Red and Black Attack Homecoming fair outside the University Union beginning at 9 a.m. The fair will feature tables for various campus organizations, a chance to meet the Pioneer baseball, water polo and basketball teams and a dunk tank to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the campus community will have the chance to pay $1 to dunk coaches, faculty and staff while supporting Make-A-Wish.
Tuesday, Feb. 1, will bring one of the university's favorite Homecoming traditions in the East Bay Idol Contest where participants will compete for a chance to perform at the basketball games during Homecoming Week. The competition will take place at noon in the University Union. The Office Decorating Contest will also be held Tuesday, as campus departments deck out their offices in red and black to show their Pioneer Pride.
The halfway point of Homecoming Week will see East Bay students and student-athletes alike don CSUEB attire from the Pioneer Bookstore and gear from Pioneer teams of the past during a lunchtime Pioneer Pride Fashion Show. Wednesday night, Feb. 2, will bring a pep rally to get everyone ready and excited for the week's athletic matchups, including basketball, baseball, softball and water polo.
Another Homecoming Week tradition returns on Thursday, Feb. 3, at the Bookstore, where the Kiss the iPod competition will be held, challenging pairs of competitors to hold an iPod between them using only their lips for as long as possible. The lunchtime contest will be followed by the Homecoming Parade at 3:30 p.m. and the week's first games, as the Pioneer basketball teams host Cal State Monterey Bay. The Pioneer women are set for a 5:30 p.m. tip, while the men will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Activities Friday, Feb. 4, kick off at 2 p.m. when Pioneer baseball gets its season underway against Vanguard, followed by a poolside luau at the women's water polo game against Sonoma State. The luau will feature free food, prizes and exciting water polo action beginning at 3 p.m.
The biggest day in Homecoming Week, Saturday, will get an early start as Pioneer baseball reconvenes with Vanguard for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at Pioneer Field. At 2 p.m., fans are invited to the ASI/Alumni Pre-Game Tailgate in Lot A, where students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members will be treated to music, food, a bounce house, face painting and contests in preparation for the Homecoming games and Battle of the Bay. The CCAA basketball doubleheader against San Francisco State is slated for a 5:30 p.m. start and will feature performances by Eclectic Pulse and Stance, as well as the presentation of the Homecoming Court.
Sunday's softball home opener against Academy of Art will wrap up the 2011 Homecoming festivities.
