Cal State East Bay falls to UC San Diego

HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneers remained winless in CCAA play at 0-6 and 2-8 overall following a 64-53 defeat to UC San Diego on Jan. 3. The Tritons defeated the Pioneers 69-55 on Dec. 14.

East Bay trailed 32-25 at halftime and narrowed the Tritons advantage to 38-36 on a Rodrigue Maza 3-pointer with 14:59 left.

The Tritons scored eight unanswered points to take a 46-36 lead at the 11:29 mark. The Pioneers cut the lead to 50-46 with 5:58 remaining on a Mark Samuels jumper.

UC San Diego took advantage of the free throw line to secure the victory and improve to 3-3 in the CCAA and 8-4 for the season.

The Pioneers shot 37.5 percent from the field and were outrebounded by a 48-25 margin. East Bay turned the ball over only 11 times compared to 24 in a defeat to Humboldt State on December 30.

Samuels led the Pioneers in scoring with 10 points followed by Roshun Wynne with nine.

The Tritons Christian Hatch led all scorers with 24 points on 6 of 9 from the field and 12 of 14 from the free throw line. Hatch completed a double-double with 12 rebounds. Tyler McGrath came off the bench to score 13 points while Ryan Casey had 10. Casey led the Tritons on the boards with 17 rebounds.

Following three straight CCAA home games, the Pioneers will hit the road and play at Cal State Stanislaus on January 7 and Chico State on Jan. 8.
