LONG BEACH, Calif. - Four days of outstanding individual performances enabled the Pioneer women's swim team to finish a school best ninth place at the PCSC Championships on February 19.

East Bay, with a score of 457.5 points, finished ahead of Biola, Chapman, SOKA and Vanguard in the team standings. UC San Diego captured the PCSC Championships with 1635 points.

After establishing three school records in the championships, Murphy Wimer set a fourth school record in the 200 yard backstroke. Murphy earned her third individual medal of the meet, swimming to 3rd place in a new school record (her 4th individual record for the weekend) of 2:07.20. Linda Klinke held the old record of 2:09.53 set in 1992. Christine Gee dropped over three seconds from her morning swim, a great turnaround performance, and came up 21st in the event (2:23.14).

Sara Bonino had a strong swim in the 1650 yd. Free as she took fifth place honors with a time of 18:01.25, making her East Bay's second swimmer of the meet to crack the top 8 individually.
Freshman Becca Stratton dropped over thirty seconds from her previous best to go 19:16.31, earning the first points of her collegiate career with a 15th-place finish.

Freshman Rachel Knowles repeated her time from her excellent morning swim, going 2:28.81 in the 200-yd. Breastroke. Knowles was 12th overall in the race, making her three-for-three in reaching the top-16 for her individual events.

All three sprinters boasted great improvement in the 100-yd. Free. Lindsay Miller was the lone point-scorer for the event, as she was in the top 24, and her time of 55.92 was her first clocking under 56 seconds in the event (20th place). Jenni Perez echoed her morning swim with a 57.58, which earned 28th place. Senior Heidi Reddig, who was later honored as East Bay's only graduating senior, swam in the "E" final and went a strong 58.89, good for 33rd place.

The foursome of Wimer, Bonino, Miller and Perez recorded a time of 3:41.36 to take fifth place in the 400 medley relay. It was a decidedly outstanding effort by the East Bay women, with captain Wimer leading off a 53.41 for a new team record in the 100-yd. freestyle.

Pioneer head coach Ben Loorz was pleased about his team's performance at the PCSC Championships.

"Our team made a statement about the direction of the swim program at Cal State East Bay. Nine out of 10 athletes scored at the meet. We scored 457.5 points compared to 164 in last years' championship. Even though, we didn't win any events, our swimmers placed high in the prelims and finals.

"I'm proud of my team and especially the performance of the 800 yd. Freestyle relay team. All four swimmers did a fantastic job to shatter the school record. Following the Pioneers' performance in the PCSC Championships, I'm looking forward to next season."

The team improvement at this year's PCSC Championship meet was extraordinary. Their morale was sky-high, with 100% of the athletes swimming season-best times in all their races. Below is a breakdown of the achievements at the meet:
