HAYWARD -- Cal State East Bay received a $540,000 grant Wednesday from pharmaceutical and health care giant Bayer Corp. for continuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.
The grant -- which is administered through the Bayer USA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the company -- will be used by the university to further its Center for STEM Education -- a new initiative that stresses the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines."We are enormously grateful to Bayer for this grant," said Mo Qayoumi, president of Cal State East Bay. "They share our dedication to strengthening the economy of the East Bay region, and our vision of a new paradigm for math and science education in California and the region."School officials say they hope the center will enhance the role the university plays in regional and national education issues by training kindergarten through 12th grade teachers.
The grant, which will be distributed over three years, will allow the university to begin teacher development in STEM education and help their students further their academic achievement. "With this grant, Bayer is deepening its investment in STEM education in an area of the country that is of major importance to our biotechnology business and the company as a whole," said Greg Babe, president and chief executive of Bayer and president of the Bayer USA Foundation.
